Homeopathy on the Internet
An In-depth Guide to the Best Sites
Miranda Castro FSHom, RSHom (NA), CCH
This article was first published in Homeopathy
Today in February 2003 and appears here by kind permission of the author
and the National Center for Homeopathy www.homeopathic.org
In December I sent out approximately
seventy emails to friends and colleagues around the world asking them to
send me their favorite homeopathic websites. In addition to these I added
my own favorites. I trust this compilation of homeopathy sites on the Internet
will inform, interest, and inspire you.
So many of the sites listed in this
article are fascinating as well as fun. I hope you will jump into this
virtual ocean of learning and explore it to the end of the Internet and
beyond! You can easily jump to a site by simply by clicking on the links
in this article that interest you.
There are unpleasant distractions
on many websites: ads that pop up (some of which are cunningly disguised
as messages); flashing banners which give you an instant migraine; orange
backgrounds and tiny print which make reading on a computer screen impossible.
I tended to exclude these--as I did those that were slow to load or outdated.
The Internet makes studying homeopathy
a breeze--for students, homeopaths, and teachers. There’s tons of information,
much of it interesting or even fascinating. The trick is to be careful
about the time you spend on sites of dubious scholarly value! The Internet
is full of people who are writing all their thoughts, feelings, and opinions
with little or no editing.
Frustration-free surfing
• Use your local library if you don’t
have a computer.
• Limit
your time, and stretch frequently so you don’t turn to stone!
• Use "bookmarks" in your web browser
so that you can return to an interesting site. (It isn’t easy to remember
where you’ve been.)
• Type
the exact name of the site you want to visit--with every single dot in
exactly the right place.
• Search with care and cunning.
Searching on the web
Google is universally considered
the best search engine. You’ll find the English one at www.google.com.
There are French and German Googles at www.google.fr
and www.google.de respectively!
Searching is an art. Choose your
words carefully and vary them to find other sites. Spell homoeopathy with
the extra "o" to scoop up sites in England, or spell it like the French
do (homeopathie) and see what you get. Put the words "classical homeopathy"
together within quotation marks and your search will give you results with
that exact phrase. Use the full botanical names for remedies (e.g., "Atropa
belladonna") to find those sites with botanical and homeopathic information,
otherwise you will tend to get a lot of "other" sites. Try searching for
"deadly nightshade" (the common name for Belladonna), then for "Belladonna"
alone. And finally for "Atropa belladonna." Each search gives different
results with the last search producing many more botanical and homeopathic
sites.
Click on the Advanced Search button
on Google’s home page and play with your searches to uncover some real
treasures.
Many homeopathy sites have "search"
buttons and some have them on every page. Search wildly: type in anything
that crosses your mind. See what happens.
Check out www.kartoo.com--a
search engine with a map, with a graphical result for your searching. It’s
crazy fun!

www.homeoint.org
An unbelievable collection of homeopathic
books online many of which have photos and illustrations. Bradford’s biography
of Hahnemann, The Life and Letters of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, is a
distinct treasure. This site is seriously addictive: do not go to it late
at night unless you can take your laptop to bed with you.
Consultations
There are many websites offering
homeopathic treatment by email--for both humans and animals. 262 sites
came up when I searched for "homeopathic consultation" online--many from
homeopaths in Pakistan and India. The homeopaths concerned may never meet
or speak with their patients. As with all other consultations, you are
advised to seek out homeopaths that are qualified as well as certified
with reputable, national homeopathic organizations. It is always advisable
to consult with your homeopathic practitioner face to face if at all possible.
Discussion Groups
Connect with enthusiasts from around
the world and discuss everything homeopathic including philosophy, methodology,
and materia medica.

Education
There are a tremendous number of
sites offering online education or distance learning opportunities: from
basic, first-aid homeopathy courses to more comprehensive ones. Using the
words "homeopathy" or "homoeopathy" and "distance learning" or "online"
and "course" or "class" (e.g., "homeopathy online class" or "homoeopathy
distance learning course") will bring up hundreds or even thousands of
results.
If you are interested in studying

Homeopathy,
Economics, and Government
By Linda Johnston, MD, DHt
The early 1800's was a time of great transition in medicine. Whereas
the standard, allopathic form of treatment was dominant at the turn of
that century, that was not to last. The two most popular alternatives to
the orthodox practice were herbal medicine and Homeopathy.
By the time Homeopathy was introduced to America in 1825, herbal medicine
was already well established. Equally well established was the allopathic
doctors' animosity towards any competition. The rise of Homeopathy particularly
coincided with a dramatic decline in the prestige of allopathic medicine
and
its methods. There was a general and pervasive disdain and mistrust of
allopathic medicine. One author concluded that "to many people the interests
of the medical profession as a whole were opposed to the best interests
of society."
Within 15 years of being introduced to America, Homeopathy was offering
serious competition to allopathic medicine and by 1860, Homeopathy was
flourishing with many doctors available in every state. The biggest asset
to the spread of Homeopathy was the home prescriber, or unlicensed lay
practitioner. America of the 1800's was predominantly rural and most areas
had no physician close at hand.
Mothers treating their children's problems easily and inexpensively
caused the news of Homeopathy to spread like a brush fire throughout the
mid-west and eastern seaboard. While political battles and turf wars raged
between the doctors, many people successfully treated typhoid, cholera,
measles, mumps, tuberculosis, smallpox and other
diseases with their Homeopathic remedies and without doctors.
Even the press of the day were favorable to Homeopathy and its articles
often reflected the general public's contempt for allopathic medicine.
One such article condemned "the rigidly anti-innovative attitude which
the Old School doctors have so consistently maintained for centuries" and
recommended that there be free and open competition between the two systems,
"where the public will act as umpires, deciding after a careful perusal
of the undertakers bills on either side."
As a consequence, extreme hatred and economic jealousy was aroused in
the allopaths. These economic concerns were well documented. One review
wrote of Homeopathy, "quackery .... by fraud and deception, too frequently
triumphs and grows rich, where wiser and better men scarcely escape starvation."
In 1846, The New York Journal of Medicine stated, "quackery occasions a
large pecuniary loss to us."
The public was quite willing to pay high fees for Homeopathy, much to
the consternation of the economically struggling allopaths. Most Homeopaths
had higher incomes than their allopathic counterparts, having busy, thriving
practices in the same areas where allopaths couldn't earn enough to live.
The annual income for an allopath in 1871 averaged $1000, whereas a Homeopath's
averaged $4000.
The allopaths blamed the public for the situation, contemptuously regarding
them as ignorant, undiscriminating and easily deceived, clearly needing
to be protected from their own perverse ignorance. It never occurred to
the allopathic doctors that the public, rather than being ignorant of orthodox
medicine, were very familiar with it and consequently didn't like it.
If you think doctors have outgrown this attitude from 1800, I will refer
you to the recent article in the prestigious allopathic journal The New
England Journal of Medicine. After reviewing the habits of a large cohort
of patients, it was concluded that one third of Americans use some method
of non-conventional medical treatment and pay more out of their own pocket
to do so than the combined money spent on all primary care allopathic office
visits.
As a result of this startling finding, the authors did not suggest further
investigation as to why such a large number of patients prefer non-traditional
treatment, nor was it suggested that these treatments must have something
valuable to offer. Instead, in a move reminiscent of attitudes over 150
years old, the authors advised that doctors inquire if their patients are
using some form of non-conventional therapy so that they can better bring
these errant patients back to conventional treatment.
The brunt of the blame for declining allopathic fortunes was laid at
the door of the Homeopaths. The allopaths had concern about the growing
competition from Homeopathy, stated as "quackery in the profession." They
felt the apparently declining standards of medical education was the cause
of physicians converting to Homeopathy and these ideas were the prime motives
in the founding of the American Medical Association in 1847.
It is interesting to note that the professional organization for Homeopathy
equivalent to the AMA, the American Institute of Homeopathy, was founded
earlier in 1844, making it the oldest professional medical organization.
Many efforts were used to advance the allopaths by discrediting, restricting
and abolishing the Homeopaths. Typical were the laws passed in the early
1800's to prevent any practitioners of medicine other than the allopaths
from being able to go to court to collect non-payment of fees. In every
case, these and other similar laws were unenforceable and extremely unpopular
with the citizenry. All were repealed within a few years.
Undaunted, the allopathic doctors then turned to their own medical societies
rather than the legislative process to carry out their desire for effective
restriction of Homeopathy. Allopaths granted themselves the right to restrict
society membership, which was tantamount to licensing powers. Fines were
levied against anyone practicing medicine without such a society membership.
They had successfully usurped the power to control who could practice.
Eventually even these fines were also rescinded due to unpopularity with
the citizens.
Pennsylvania and New York were the first states to forbid membership
in the society by medical doctors who practiced Homeopathy. State medical
society membership and representation in the AMA required that these societies
purge themselves of any member Homeopaths.
After 1847, all state societies did this, except Massachusetts. In addition,
professional exchange, consultation and even conversation between allopaths
and Homeopaths were banned. This ban on interaction between the two groups
is a striking example of how a private organization, the AMA, could completely
flout the public will, and take punitive action for something that was
totally legal.
All this speaks of the restraint of trade. All professions have used
laws, licensing, legislation, unions and guilds to protect their own economic
interests. Not surprisingly, the suppression of Homeopathy, then and continuing
to this very day, is seeped with the same motives.
None of the efforts at abolishing Homeopathy, including state society
expulsion, were particularly effective until the turn of this century.
Then, it wasn't legislation or licensing that was responsible for the decline
of Homeopathy. The infusion of large amounts of money from Carnegie and
Rockefeller to the cause of allopathic medicine was instrumental in tipping
the scales in its favor. It is ironic that Rockefeller, a beneficiary of
Homeopathic treatment himself, should fund its demise. The final shove
out the door of popularity was the discovery of antibiotics and the dawning
of the age of chemical therapeutics.
By the middle of this century, Homeopathy was all but eliminated. The
thousands of practitioners had vanished, the hundred or so medical schools
had closed and the vast majority of the general population had never even
heard of Homeopathy.
The reemergence of Homeopathy started in the early 1970's as disillusionment
with the pharmaceutical approach of medical therapeutics began to surface.
Natural foods, exercise, natural living, concern about pollution and chemical
toxins in our bodies and the environment began to take center stage. In
addition to which, the sterling reputation of technological and pharmacological
medicine for invincible prowess and superiority was becoming more and more
tarnished. Just as occurred 150 years ago, the public had experienced the
side effects, personal cost and problems of allopathic medicine and was
voting with their feet.
Now Homeopathy becomes more and more popular each and every year. In
the 5 years between 1985 and 1990, the sale of Homeopathic products increased
1000%. Now when I tell the person seated next to me on the plane that I
am a doctor who practices Homeopathy, he doesn't mistake that for making
house calls.
Self Help With Homeopathy
- First Aid Kits
Homeopathic medicine developed much of its popularity in the United
States and Europe because of its success in treating people with cholera,
scarlet fever, yellow fever and other infectious diseases that were ravaging
populations. Homeopathy also provides many valuable medicines in treating
people who suffer from accidents and injuries. When these medicines are
used in conjunction with conventional first aid procedures, the risk of
long-term damage from an injury can be significantly decreased and the
healing process can be noticeably enhanced.
First
Aid Kits Homeopathy can be of great assistance when dealing with
minor injuries at home or out in the world. Often an injury is not serious
enough to warrant a trip to the doctor's office. It is a good idea to put
together or purchase a homeopathic kit. There are a few essential remedies
that you will come back to over and over again. The kit is recommended
for use in self-limiting conditions and conditions that do not require
medical monitoring or diagnosis.

I
own several homeopathic kits at home and I
keep one kit in the clove compartment of my car for emergencies. I find
the cost of the kits to be much more economical than individual bottles.
On average one homeopathic bottle in a kit cost about US$ 2.35 instead
of $9+ for a single individual bottle. I only use one to three tiny
little pellets as a dose when treating myself, my family or my pets. Unlike
allopathic medicine, the size and quantities of homeopathic pellets make
no difference in the therapeutic results. One pellet, the size of a grain
of sugar has the same therapeutic effect as a pellet the size of a pea.
Likewise, twenty pellets have the same therapeutic effect as one pellet.
Avoid exposing your remedies to direct sunlight and strong odors (cleaners,
mint, camphor). Endeavor to refrain from handling the tablets directly
with your fingers--it is better to put the tablet into the bottle cap and
dispense it from there.

1. For acute illnesses that come on suddenly, homeopathy works fairly easily
when it comes to looking up symptoms and matching the correct remedy.
2. No need for a water supply, the small homeopathic pellets (globules)
are usually small poppy-seed sized pills and are placed under the tongue.
They dissolve quickly with no taste (great for babies, toddlers, and for
situations where no clean water can be found).
3. Instant relief within 5 to 15 minutes with only one dose. Normally only
one pellet is needed, if the symptoms return, then only, is another pellet
taken.
4. No side effects- the remedies are all low potencies.
5. No synthetic chemicals that cause allergies.
6. Revitalized energy force, returns the body to its "balanced" state.

Homeopathy
for Women's Health
Homeopathy can be used to treat many common physical and emotional symptoms
associated with menstrual cycles, hormone imbalances, and pre-menstrual
syndrome. Because of its emphasis on treating the whole patient on a physical,
mental, and emotional level, it is ideally suited for treating the wide
range of possible symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle.
Because homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body's healing
system to regain a sense of balance, problems involving hormonal imbalances
respond well to homeopathic treatment.
When treating a patient for PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome), the homeopathic
practitioner will select the most appropriate remedy that covers the range
of symptoms experienced. These may include fluid retention, breast tenderness,
headaches, irritability, weepiness, mood swings.
Homeopathic treatment is also effective in treating problems associated
with menstruation - heavy bleeding, prolonged periods, painful periods,
absent periods, etc. It is quite common for women who have experienced
debilitating menstrual cramps for many years to have pain-free menstrual
cycles after treatment.
Homeopathy is commonly used to treat uterine fibroids, and homeopathic
treatment may prevent the need for a hysterectomy.
Symptoms of menopause also respond to homeopathy - hot flushes, insomnia,
mood swings. See the section on Homeopathy during menopause for more information.
Homeopathy can also be used to treat infertility conditions. Homeopathy
can also help couples conceive even when there is no known medical reason
for the infertility.
The range of conditions that may be treated with homeopathy is very
wide, and includes cystitis, migraines, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome,
arthritis, anxiety, depression, insomnia, eczema, hayfever, bladder infections,
gallstones or kidney stones, respiratory ailments, etc.
In addition, homeopathic treatment is safe and effective during pregnancy.
It can help with symptoms of morning sickness, heartburn, constipation,
and hemorrhoids.
Increasing numbers of women are making use of homeopathy during labour
and childbirth, and homeopathic treatment can be very helpful after delivery,
or during breast-feeding. more
My experience with homeopathy
by Shirley, author of this website
"I experienced the incredible healing power of homeopathy in 1981 after
I had been chronically sick for years and was addicted to prescription
and over the counter drugs. Unfortunately, instead of generating a cure,
the medications (steroids, antibiotics, antihistamine, etc.) merely temporarily
suppressed my symptoms, weakened my immune system, and in the long run
made me sicker. When I received homeopathic treatment from a professional
experienced homeopath my health had an amazing turn around. In time I experienced
a dramatic and permanent cure of all my symptoms. Blown away, I bought
dozens of homeopathic books, subscribed to homeopathic journals and started
to study homeopathy at home for the next several years. I'm not a doctor
or a nurse, but when a member of my family get sick or injured (including
my dog) I immediately use homeopathic medicine, always with great success,
and avoid seeing a conventional doctor or veterinarian. You can read my

First Aid Whilst it must be emphasised that the practice of homeopathy
entails a detailed knowledge of Materia Medica, nevertheless First Aid
and Domestic Emergencies can often be treated safely and effectively at
home. This is partly because of the affinities of various remedies for
particular tissues and because experience has shown that injuries and common
ailments, such as burns, bruises, cuts and stings, respond well to well
proved remedies. Ailments such as coughs, colds, sore throats and indigestion
may also be safely treated. Provided the doses are not repeated too
frequently
or over too long a period they will not do harm. However whatever the problem
it must be strongly emphasised that if any of these conditions do not readily
yield to treatment or appear to be serious professional help must be sought.

Medicine at Home : Natural Remedies for Everyday Ailments and Minor Injuries
by
Maesimund, M.D. Panos, Jane Heimlich
Of all the homeopathic books written for the general public, this is
one of the most useful. If you've suffered a minor injury, or come down
with a cold, flu or earache, or if you are having an upset stomach, this
book will quickly guide you to the correct remedy. It is easily understood
by the medical layperson, and it will give you solid knowledge of how to
treat yourself and others in a safe, natural way, without the risks, side-effects
and costs of conventional drugs. It goes without saying that any self-help
book, no matter how good, does not replace the care of a medical professional.
If you have a serious or chronic condition, and you think that homeopathy
can help, go see a qualified homeopathic practitioner." an amazon.com reviewer
What happens during
a visit to a homeopath?
"The first visit with a homeopath usually lasts
60-90 minutes. During the visit, the homeopath will review the patient's
medical history and attempt to elicit a full picture of the patient's symptoms
- mental, emotional, and physical. A homeopathic medicine will be chosen
to match the patient's unique constellation of symptoms. Sometimes the
practitioner will need to do even more research after the visit before
choosing the medicine. Scheduling of follow-up visits will vary depending
on the case and the practitioner's philosophy. intervals of four to six
weeks are not unusual. A follow-up visit typically lasts about 30 minutes."
Homeopathy
is an art and a science. At the hands of a skilled homeopathic practitioner
homeopathy can do miracles. I was introduced to homeopathy in 1981. At
the time I was overweight (185 lbs), suffered from chronic fatigue and
my health was steadily going down the drain. For years I had been a "junkie"--addicted
to prescription and over the counter drugs. For years I used corticosteroids
for eczema/psoriasis, and antibiotics for recurring throat and breast infections.
I also used nasal decongestions for chronic sinus congestion, and
other drugs for chronic backaches and other health problems. Unfortunately,
instead of generating a cure, the medications (including a course of
nine months of antibiotics) merely temporarily suppressed my symptoms,
weakened my immune system, and in the long run made me sicker. (side
effects of corticosteroids). The MD was considering a mastectomy for
stubborn cysts (hard lumps) in my breast.
During the initial homeopathic
consultation, the interview lasted 1 1/2 hour. My homeopath prescribed
a single remedy, in a single dose (2 to 4 pellets). My follow
up appointments were scheduled about every 2 months. He also prescribed
a change of diet to eating mostly raw food.
The results of the diet change
and homeopathic treatment were dramatic. In 6 weeks, the lumps in my breast
were completely gone (cause/prevention/natural
cures of breast cancer). In 12 weeks I had lost 60 pounds effortlessly
and never had to struggle again to keep my weight down. My energy level
and stamina improved dramatically. I was able to function better overall.
I became calmer, centered and focused, and generally I felt happier. My
overall resistance to infections became excellent, and I'm proud to say
that in the past 20 years I have not had a cold, flu, ear, throat, sinus
or breast infection or any other infections. I was amazed that even my
debilitating back pains responded to the homeopathic treatment and the
change of diet more about my health recovery
Unfortunately, there are
a few incompetent practitioners out there. You can spot such practitioner
when they prescribe a bunch of different remedies at once. I know a lady
in Canada who was disappointed with homeopathy. She said it didn't work
for her. Her practitioner had prescribed hundreds of dollar worth of remedies.
That is a red flag. One standard bottle of a homeopathic remedy should
cost between $ 7 and $20 (US$) depending on the potency and the size of
the bottle. Usually in chronic medical condition no more than one
constitutional homeopathic remedy should be prescribed at a time, usually
in single dose of a hight potency.
In acute cases (trauma, sudden illness, pain, fever, ) a few different
remedies of low or high potencies may be called for until the condition
is resolved
Self medicating
Some people attempt to self
medicate using homeopathic formulas for allegies, backache, earaches, etc.
which are available in pharmacies and health food store. These formulas
are made of a combination of homeopathic remedies. I advise against attempting
to self-medicating with these combo remedies or with single remedies, especially
in chronic or constitutional case if you are not familiar how to use homeopathy.
There are some excellent books about homeopathic self-care
which I highly recommend to learn how to self medicatae in case acute illness
or trauma and emergencies. As I mentioned above, homeopathy is an
art
and a science and in the hands of a skilled practitioner,
it can perform miracles

Veterinary Homeopathy
(for lay people and professionals)
A growing number of veterinarians are turning to homeopathic veterinary
medicine as a safe and effective alternative to conventional veterinary
practice. Homeopathic remedies use minute amounts of substances to act
as a trigger to the body and stimulate its natural immune system. We are
attempting to make your pet as healthy as he or she can be and gradually
build up their body to the best that it can be. We are working with the
immune system and not against it and aiming for a cure.
Frustrated with the failures of conventional veterinary medicine, a
growing number of veterinarians are devoting themselfves to veterinary
homeopathy exclusively
Dr.
Charles E Loops DVM - "After 10 years of traditional
veterinary practice I became tired of having no treatment for chronic disease,
incurable conditions, and a plethora of allergic maladies which seem to
plague all veterinary practices. I was frustrated with giving animals cortisone
because I had no other solutions, or using antibiotics for infections which
I knew were of viral origin. There is so much that can be done for an animal,
bird, or reptile that is ailing by utilizing homeopathic medicine." enter

Medicine for Children and Infants
A growing number of parents are concerned about the potential side effects
of conventional drugs and are now turning to the safer medicine-homeopathy.
Infants and children respond wonderfully to simple homeopathic remedies.
With Homeopathy children's health can improve and chronic conditions often
clear up completely and never come back. It is safe with no harmful side
effects. Homeopathy cures by looking at the whole individual and can be
effective in unexpected ways. To name some eminently children disorders,
where homoeopathy works very well : Infant’s colic, Fever, Teething problems,
Vomiting, Dysentery, Nephrotic Syndrome (Kidney disease), Growth related
problems, Convulsions (Epilepsy), Attention Deficit Disorder and Hyperactivity,
Infantile Eczema, Jaundice, Brain infections (Meningitis), Fungal infections,
Warts, Hair-Loss (Alopecia), Growing pains, Poor concentration, Arthritis
in children, Psoriasis, Leucoderma (white spots), Pimples, and Thyroid
problems to name a few. Homoeopathy can be proclaimed to be definitely
effective, for various emotional disorders occurring commonly in the new
generation children of this 20th century. Various psychosomatic disorders
such as Bed-wetting, Headaches, and Gastritis respond to homoeopathy. enter
