Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands
recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food
Friday after reports of kidney failure and
deaths. An unknown number of cats and dogs
suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet

News Reports that Rat Poison Has Been Found in the Contaminated Pet
Food That Has Killed Scores of Animals. A source close to
the investigation tells ABC News that the rodenticide, which the source
says is illegal to use in the United States, was on wheat that was imported
from China and used by Menu Foods in nearly 100 brands of dog and cat food.
Aminopterin is not registered for use in the United States as a pesticide,
and it has been known as a potential source of birth defects in humans.
Some veterinary experts say they are still skeptical as to whether the
chemical is responsible for the kidney damage the pets suffered. "With
the information that we have, none of us feel that this product fits the
lesions we are seeing, but there may be information we don't know yet,"
said Lawrence McGill, a veterinary pathologist in Salt Lake City. "The
feeling is that there are more questions than answers with this product."
"Renal failure is not the expected response to these drugs," said Susan
Weinstein, executive director of the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association.
She added that most rodent poisons work as severe anticoagulants — meaning
they cause the rats that ingest them to bleed to death. "Whether this particular
toxin in this case can create renal failure depends on how this drug works
in the body, which may be an entirely different pathway than the anticoagulants,"
Weinstein said. "Because we aren't yet familiar with this toxin, we can't
be confident of the causation link."

News - March 28, 07 The number of cases of kidney failure among
dogs and cats that ate poisoned pet food could total in the tens of thousands,
the head of the nation's biggest veterinary Web site said yesterday. Dr.
Paul Pion, president of the Veterinary Information Network, said vets had
reported 471 cases - including 104 deaths - since March 16, when Menu Foods
Inc. recalled moist pet food sold under 95 labels. Scientists have said
the food was laced with rat poison. Those numbers came from just 10% of
the 30,000 veterinarians and veterinary students using the Web site. Pion
said more accounts of stricken pets had been coming in since the numbers
were tallied over the weekend. He said the final number for pets suffering
from kidney failure could be in the tens of thousands..
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that the tests detected melamine
-- used in the manufacture of plastics, laminates and fertilizer -- in
samples of the Menu Foods pet food. It was also found in an ingredient,
wheat gluten. FDA officials said that Cornell University scientists,
who conducted independent tests on the federal agency's behalf, also found
melamine in the urine of sick cats and in the kidney of one cat that died
after eating the company's wet food. Stephen Sundlof, the director of the
FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said there was an "undeniable" connection
between the melamine in the cats' urine and the melamine in the pet food.
But he added that the FDA was not yet certain whether the melamine caused
the pets' deaths, and it hasn't determined how the substance got into the
