for urinalysis, blood serum, liver function, and thyroid testing. A glossary
defines various terms such as acidosis and hepatic, and each description
is easily understandable, even by those with no medical background whatsoever.
For puppy owners, the chapter discussing vaccinations is informative--Volhard
questions the necessity of many we take for granted, and suggests several
methods for lowering the required number for your pup.
Ultimately, the majority of this book is geared toward folks who are
already committed to providing their pooches with alternative health care
and homemade food. No matter how interesting the dietary concepts presented
here, if you aren't already a true believer it's not likely that Volhard's
anecdotes will provide you with enough statistical proof to completely

About the Authors
Wendy Volhard developed the Natural Diet in 1973 after her first Landseer
Newfoundland. Heidi, was given only a few months to live at the age 6.
Once on the Natural Diet, Heidi lived to the ripe old age of 12. Since
then, countless dog owners have followed Wendy's Natural Diet to enhance
the health, longevity and quality of life of their dogs.
Wendy specializes in the influence of health and nutrition on behavior
and complementary sourced of health care, such as acupuncture, chiropractic
and homeopathy. A respected consultant to breeders, dog owners and veterinarians,
she is also an internationally recognized lecturer. For the past 30 years,
through her training classed, lectures, weekend seminars, five-day Holistic
and Training Camps, Wendy Volhard has taught more than 20,000 dog owners
how to achieve a mutually rewarding relationship with their pets. Wendy
gives seminars in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom on
behavior, instruction, training, health and nutrition and its effects on
behavior, and conducts on annual five-day holistic Camp together with Kerry
Brown, D.V.M. and Sue Ann Lesser, D.V.M., as was as two five-day Training
Camps. Time permitting, Wendy does a limited number of private consultations.
She is a true practitioner, who has bred, raised and trained Landseer Newfoundland
for over 25 years, as well as a Briard, a German Shepherd Dog, a Labrador
Retriever, Standard Wirehaired Dachshunds and Yorkshire Terriers. Wendy
shares her home in upstate New York with her husband of 35 years, six dogs
and three cats. Together with her husband, Jack, Wendy has earned over
50 conformation, obedience and working titles with her dogs.
Wendy had developed the most widely used system for evaluation puppies
for the right home and task, and a Personality Profile for dogs to help
owners understand why their pets do what they do.
She is the co-author of four books including The Complete Idiots Guide
to a Well-Trained Dog (Alpha Book, 1999), and co-producer of four video
tapes. She is the recipient of four awards from the Dog Writers' Association
of America.

of dogs and, cats we are seeing tremendous increases in chronic ill health
in our pets that was rare back in the early 1960's. Most of these illnesses
revolve around breakdown in our pets' immune systems, and include chronic

is a perception among many people that bottled water is somehow more healthy
or pure than water from their tap. This is simply an illusion of marketing.
A four-year study by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), released
in 1999, found that one-fifth of the sampled bottled waters contained known

Optimum Animal Nutrition
A growing number of veterinarians state that processed pet food (kibbles
and canned food) is the main cause of illness and premature death in the
modern dog and cat. In December 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal
Practice published a paper contending that processed pet food supresses
the immune system and leads to liver, kidney, heart and other diseases.
Dr. Kollath, of the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, headed a study done
on animals. When young animals were fed cooked and processed foods they
initially appeared to be healthy. However, as the animals reached adulthood,
they began to age more quickly than normal and also developed chronic degenerative
disease symptoms. A control group of animals raised on raw foods aged less
quickly and were free of degenerative disease.
Pet food (kibbles and canned food for dogs or cats) is one of the world's
most synthetic edible products, containing virtually no whole ingredients.
A growing number of veterinarians and animal nutritionists say that many
of our pets' disease and suffering can be prevented or cured with nutrition.
Holistic veterinarians teach that processed pet food (meaning COOKED food)
is the main cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog and
cat. In December 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal Practice published

INTEGRATING HOMEOPATHY
AND HOLISTIC MEDICINE INTO YOUR VETERINARY PRACTICE

Following are excerpts of Dr. Chambreau's lecture to a homeopathic/holistic-health
minded audiance
The researchers in conventional veterinary medicine agree that we vaccinate
too often, in combinations, and that this level of vaccination, while possibly
preventing epidemics, is harmful to the health of
susceptible animals. The AVMA has just recommended (1/98) that cats
and dogs only be vaccinated every 3 years. They acknowledge that they do
really know how long vaccines last. Holistically, we find vaccinations
one of the most harmful thing we do to animals. I recommend no vaccines
at all (except the legally required Rabies, which is a viral vaccine and
so probably protects for a lifetime). I do not recommend using homeopathic
nosodes for protection. Experience has demonstrated that building up
the overall health of your animal and treating any illnesses holistically
is the best protection and the best way for a long, healthy life. The insert
on vaccine packages say "Give only to healthy animals", so if your animal
is ill in any way, they should not be vaccinated at that time per the manufacturers.
Poor nutrition or vaccination, of course, does not bother some animals.
WHAT IS THE HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVE? A healthy animal or person is unlikely
to get sick (or very sick) even if exposed to infectious agents. Ideally
we would never vaccinate, feed wonderful fresh food and treat the early
symptoms that indicate the body is out of balance. If they do develop an
infectious disease, it can usually be treated successfully with homeopathy.
Even vaccinated animals get those diseases for which they are vaccinated,
and may or may not be cured. The unvaccinated seem to respond better to
holistic treatment.
Drs. Schultz and Phillips (Scripps Institute)
write in Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy, Vol. 11, page 205, saying "A
practice that was started many years ago and that lacks scientific validity
or verification is annual revaccinations. Almost without exception there
is no immunological requirement for annual revaccination...The practice
of annual vaccination in our opinion should be considered of questionable
efficacy..." Dr. Schultz vaccinates his dogs as puppies for only distemper
and parvo, then only Rabies the rest of their lives. Even Rabies vaccine
is probably good for more than 3 years, since it is a viral vaccine. The
tests done by the vaccine manufacturers on the required 7 dogs (only 7),
were carried out only at one or three years post vaccine. If they had tested
dogs longer post vaccine, rabies vaccine may be good for life. A veterinary
immunologist in the rabies field admitted in private to me that most animals
are protected for life after the first two rabies vaccinations, and almost
all are protected after the third injection!!! Veterinarians checking their
titers rather than re-vaccinating themselves for rabies are discovering
that titers persist forever, in most individuals. New (1998) recommendations
from the Advisory panel on feline vaccines of the Association of Feline
Practitioners and the Academy of Feline Medicine are to give only FVRCP
and Rabies every 3 years and non core vaccinations (chlamydiosis, FELV,
FIP and ringworm) to coats with high exposure. Further support for decreasing
vaccine use comes from the 1st International Veterinary Vaccines and Diagnostics
Conference, July 27-31, 1997. Reports from a Swedish study (Olson et al,
J VetIntMed 1997:11:148), show at least four year immunity against distemper.
Cats showed high titers against panleukopenia for at least 6 years (Scott
and Geissinger. Feline Practice 1997:25(4):12-19). There is definitely
a shift in conventional thinking about vaccinations, even though as homeopaths
we recommend many fewer vaccines.
ARE VACCINATIONS POTENTIALLY HARMFUL?
Holistic veterinarians are finding that vaccines are causing great
harm to our animals (and ourselves). To cure an animal of any problem we
have found through experience that we must use homeopathic remedies that
are known to reverse vaccine related problems as well as fit this individual.
Often, if vaccinated during treatment, the progress we are making is stopped.
Because of the type of history taking used by homeopathy, we often see
problems that have occurred ever since vaccination or recur every year
after vaccination. Conventional veterinarians are also reporting health
problems due to vaccinations. "Immune-mediated hematological disease and
transient bone marrow failure are increasingly recognized sequelae of...vaccination.
... Postvacinal polyneuropathy is a recognized entity associated with...vaccines.
...Adverse reactions to vaccination have also recently been reported with
increasing frequency in cats." (Dr. Dodds, 1990)
Other reports include: immunologic disorders (Frick, Green, McDonald,
Phillips and Schultz, Tizard); adverse vaccine reactions (Green, McDonald,
Phillips and Schultz, Tizard, Wilford); increased sensitivity to pollen
antigens after vaccination (Frick, Dodds). See vaccination bibliography
for more information. The inserts that come with all vaccines say to use
them only in healthy animals. Many animals are vaccinated when they are
overtly ill, others when they are showing the more subtle signs of energy
imbalance.
Most of my clients and course participants have told horror stories
of the illnesses they feel occurred after their animals were vaccinated.
Some problems were immediate, but most were slower onset. Isis was vaccinated
at 5 years of age for her annual boosters including FELV and was admitted
to the hospital 6 hours later with a severe asthma attack. She had had
chronic coughing since 6 weeks of age (after first vaccines) that was mild
and sporadic and non responsive to any treatment, yet in the face of this
mild ill health her vaccines were continued. With conventional treatment,
she continued having asthmatic respiration with
occasional hospitalizations for the next 2 years.

  Vaccines:

are a growing number of parents and health care professionals around the

is calling for criminal penalties for any government agency that knew about
the dangers of thimerosal in vaccines and did nothing to protect American

Congressman Dan Burton (R-Indiana) during Congressional
Hearing: "You mean to tell me that since 1929, we've been using Thimerosal,
and the only test that you know of is from 1929, and every one of
those people had mennigitis, and they all died?" For nearly an hour, Burton
repeatedly asked FDA and CDC officials what they knew and when they knew
it. (Thimerosal contains a related mercury compound called ethyl mercury.
Mercury is a toxic metal that can cause immune, sensory, neurological,
motor, and behavioral dysfunctions.)

Is there more to holistic animal care than a natural diet and using
a holistic vet? You bet.
When I first started with holistic rearing, I was primarily focused
on veterinary care. My cats were sick, after all, and that was why I got
into it in the first place. For several years I dealt with getting the
diet right, educating myself, reading books, going to seminars, talking
with people doing the same thing, and taking my pets to the vet. Acupuncture,
chiropractic, herbs, and homeopathy became the focus of my efforts at "natural
rearing," and they took up most of my attention.
But one day I looked around and realized my animals, knock wood, are
