Pet
Allergies and Ear / Skin Problems
Dr. Pat Bradley, DVM, Conway, USA - "The most common problems
I see that are directly related to vaccines on
a day to day basis are ear or skin
conditions, such as chronic discharges and
itching.
I also see behaviour problems such as fearfulness
or aggression. Often guardians will report that these begin
shortly after vaccination, and are exacerbated with every vaccine. In a
more general and frightening context, I see the overall health and longevity
of animals deteriorating. The bodies of most animals have a tremendous
capacity to detoxify poisons, but they do have a limit. I think we often
exceed that limit and over-whelm the body's immune system function with
toxins from vaccines, poor quality foods, insecticides,
environmental toxins, etc. This is why we've seen such a dramatic increase
in allergies, organ failures, and behaviour
problems."
(NOTE: a growing
number of holistic veterinarians use Transfer
Factor before and after vaccination to support the immune system
and help the animal recover)
In
his best selling book, " Pet
Allergies: Remedies for an Epidemic", Dr. Alfred Plechner, DVM, paints
a dismal picture for the future of our pets. Animals are being programmed
for disaster, for extinction. Many of them are biochemical cripples with
defective adrenal glands unable to manufacture adequate cortisol, a hormone
vital for health and resistance to disease." Allergies can be, and often
are, unrecognized deficiency diseases. Recognizing nutritional deficiencies
will save you a great deal of frustration and allow you to make the necessary
adjustments in your dog’s diet."
Dr. Alfred Plechner, DVM - "The most common and most visible
symptoms of nutritionally caused deficiencies
are allergies of one kind or another. Because many commercial pet foods
are woefully deficient in key nutrients, the long term effect of feeding
such foods makes the dog hypersensitive to its environment. . . It's a
dinosaur effect. Animals are being programmed for disaster, for extinction.

Dr. Jeffrey Levy, DVM - "Have you
ever wondered why some dogs and cats have severe flea problems, while others
are hardly bothered by the little pests? Fleas can be viewed as an indicator
of an animal's general health. Parasites in general, and fleas in particular,
are most attracted to the weak, unhealthy, or very young animal whose immune
system is not functioning well. The long-term solution to a flea problem
is to reduce your pet's susceptibility to fleas by improving his/her health."

Doctors tell you that steroids (cortisone, prednisone) only cause side
effects after many years. But new research shows that permanent damage
is immediate and devastating. Studies show that steroids cause permanent,
debilitating effects after a single dosage. "Steroids are probably
the most sleazy of modern day medications" says John Mills, former professor
of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and chief of
infectious diseases at San Francisco General Hospital more

Dr. Cynthia Harcourt, DVM - "Allergies represent more than a
local inflammation of the skin. They reflect a constitutional state. From
a holistic standpoint, the approach to treatment recognizes the deeper
constitutional state and restores order and balance to the whole animal."
People that have pets with skin problems, allergies, stomach problems
and behavioral problems spend hundreds of dollars at the vet on antibiotics,
steroids, tranquilizers, and other medication. Antibiotics,
steroids,
and many other medications take a serious toll on the internal organs and
immune systems of our pets. It becomes a never-ending circle of medication
and sickness. Skin problems and allergies are often symptoms of nutritional
deficiency and toxic overload.
Dr. Blanco, D.V.M - "You take healthy animals
and often very quickly after you vaccinate, you
can see simple things like itching of the
skin or excessive
licking of the paws, sometimes even
with no eruptions. We see a lot of epilepsy,
often after a rabies vaccination. Or dogs or cats can become aggressive
for several days. Frequently, you'll see urinary
tract infections in cats, often within three months after their
[annual] vaccination. If you step back, open your mind and heart, you'll
start to see patterns of illness post-vaccination." more

is what a severe HOTSPOT looks like on a dog's tail
 My
German Shepherd dog Shasta, suffered from allergies
and severe hotspots on her tail. It was a direct result of adverse
reaction to vaccines as well as poor diet.
The inflammed area of the tail would swell up with fluid and became extremely
sensitive, painful and very itchy. Poor Shasta would constantly bite and
lick the area to try to obtain some relief. Homeopathy
is noted for its success to antidote or remove the toxic effects of vaccines
and to re-establish balance in the organism and restore health. Certain
homeopathic remedies taken before and after vaccination can minimize
vaccine damage. A professional homeopathic vet
should be consulted. Dr. Falconer DVM also uses Transfer
Factor before and after vaccination to modulate/boost animal's
immune system. Some people have found that marine
phytoplankton is also effective in improving their animals' overall
health.

Dolly, a six-year-old cocker spaniel, walked into the clinic and settled
herself down for a good scratch. Her people, both responsible and attentive
animal lovers, had frustration written all over their faces. Even though
Dolly ate a home prepared diet, she scratched incessantly. It was fairly
obvious Dolly suffered from an allergy, but to what? In my years of practice
as a veterinarian, I've seen allergies to almost everything, from fleas
to grass. Read
how Dr. Drouin was able to help Dolly over her allergies.
Is Your Pet Deficient In A Key Nutrient?
Richard J. Holliday, DVM - "Good nutrition can prevent disease. Good
nutrition can cure disease." A groundswell of nutrition conscious veterinarians
are beginning to recommend to their clients that they supplement their
animals diet with a daily dose of flaxseed oil,
chia
seeds or oil, and other nutrients for optimum health and vitality.
The food your animal eats should provide all of the nutritional components
which are necessary for all organs and systems of a healthy body to perform
in harmonious unison. A properly functioning body does an amazing job at
preventing disease and healing itself, and to do this it requires the energies
and nutrients of a well-balanced diet. In terms of finding the proper diet
for our companions, this means learning to look beyond our own needs, opinions,
and agendas to address the natural needs of the animals that we caretake.

Does
Your Pet Have Allergies? What You Need to Know and Do
By Dr. Karen Becker, DVM
Because the symptoms of inflammation are produced from the inside out,
ointments, shampoos, sprays and dips can only provide temporary relief
and although are beneficial to use for improving your pet’s quality of
life during a flare up, long-term treatment must focus on balancing
your pet’s immune system.
Steroids (also called prednisone, cortisone
or the nondescript “allergy shot”) are the least optimal treatment choice,
as they work by suppressing your pet’s immune system. Steroids
actually turn the immune system off, which improves
the symptoms remarkably fast but doesn’t address the root issue of why
your pet’s immune system is over-reacting in the first place.
Not
only can steroids have a negative effect on your pet’s liver, adrenal glands
and kidneys, but suppressing your pet’s immune system with steroids also
allows for opportunistic yeast and bacteria to grow on your pet’s skin,
sometimes increasing the chances that antibiotics may be prescribed. (more
on the danger of steroids)
Antibiotics increase the likelihood of
yeast
overgrowth, which causes your pet to:
1. Smell like a corn chip
2. Become insanely itchy, which sends you back to the
vet for more steroids
Do you see the crazy cycle? The image does a great job of explaining
it further.
As an aside, keep in mind that healthy pets do not smell bad. Yeast
exudes a musty smell, and if your pet smells this way he may have a problem
with yeast overgrowth. Many people assume their pets should smell this
way, but in reality healthy pets should only be bathed with they’re dirty
-- not because they’re smelly. Bathing smelly pets in oatmeal (a grain)
shampoo often adds fuel to the fire, requiring the pet to be re-bathed
multiple times a week in order for the owners to tolerate the pet’s odor.
Nutrition
is the Optimal Solution - The foods you feed your pet
will eventually heal or harm. Feeding
pets healing, non-allergenic foods allows their
immune systems to rest. Rebalancing
your pet’s immune system by offering natural, biologically appropriate
wholesome foods is necessary to begin the road to recovery. Also remember
that the more variety you include in your pet’s diet, the less likely your
pet will be to react to the same monotonous foods. Nutritional variety
is not only the spice of life, it’s critical for a balanced and healthy
immune response -- and for keeping your pet allergy-free. more...
The
Allergy Solution for Dogs : Natural and Conventionale Therapies to Ease
Discomfort and Enhance Your Dog's Quality of Life
by Dr. Shawn Messonnier DVM
With this book, you'll learn many ways to help your dog be more comfortable
and how to work with holistic veterinarians to cure skin problems.
A number of studies have documented the benefits of fatty
acid supplements for allergic pets. In the literature, fatty
acid supplements made from fish
oil were effective in reducing symptoms of itching and inflammation
in 11 to 27 percent of allergic dogs and over 50 percent of allergic cats.
How well fatty acids work in an allergic pet depends upon a number of factors,
including the product used, dosage, and the presence of other diseases
that can contribute to itching.
"Due to their anti-inflammatory
effects, I routinely use large doses of fatty acids when treating atopic
dermatitis in pets. Like most doctors, I recommend 2 to 4 times the label
dose, as research in allergy treatment indicates that the label dose on
most products is too low to exert an anti-inflammatory influence."
Maybe Rover's paws are constantly damp from being licked and chewed.
Or his scratching keeps you both up at night, even though he doesn't have
fleas. The culprit could be allergies.Allergic skin disease, or atopic
dermatitis, is an extremely common skin disorder in dogs. It's probably
the number one skin problem we treat in my practice. Many of the affected
dogs have not only primary atopic dermatitis, but secondary problems like
bacterial or yeast infections as well. Dr. Blanco and other veterinarians
believe that excessive itching, biting and licking of the paws are triggered
by vaccination. more about

The
conventional treatments have relied on corticosteroids and antihistamines.
While effective, corticosteroids have numerous side
effects, including increased thirst and urination, increased appetite,
weight gain, Cushing's disease, Addison's disease, osteoporosis, increased
susceptibility to infection, fatty liver disease, diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal
ulceration, cartilage degradation, and blood chemistry abnormalities. Side
effects of antihistamines are less common but include sedation and failure
to control the itching.
Complementary therapies are used to reduce or preferably eliminate the
need for chronic drug therapy, allowing relief from the itching without
the troubling side effects so often seen with conventional treatments.
Arthur Young DVM, always advises his clients to add glyconutrients
to their pets diet. Decades of consuming nutritionally questionable commercial
pet food products, the proven harmful effects of over vaccination, combined
with the unfortunate dependency on steroids and antibiotics have, according
to many reliable sources greatly contributed to a national decline in animal
health. The innate ability of the body to heal itself has been seriously
compromised in many animals, particularly dogs, cats, and horses. Glyconutrients
are compatible with any type of treatment prescribed by both conventional
and alternative practitioners. These essential carbohydrates strengthen
the body’s inner environment which, in turn, enhances the energy that stimulates
the immune system, as well as a process called “cell communication”. This
communication network results in all of the organs working with one another
in an orderly sequence of body reactions. Without these activities, good
health is impossible to attain. Although the formulation is produced for
human consumption, holistic veterinarians have also recognized the importance
of glyconutrients in supporting the handling of health challenges in animals.
Credit goes to Gunter Blobel, M.D., Ph.D. (Rockefeller University), winner
of the 1999 Nobel Prize for Medicine "for the discovery that (glyco) proteins
have intrinsic signals that govern their transport and localization in
the cell." Learn more: Healing

Skin
eruptions are often blamed on fleas, when in fact these may be the result
of a bad reaction to vaccines, to
drugs, to toxic commercial pet food or to deficiency
of vital nutrients. In my personal experience with dog and fleas, I
found that healhy dogs will be much less sensitive to flea bites. Digestive
disturbance can easily cause skin eruptions that mimic the looks and feel
of flea bites. I once had a dog, Shasta,
who had severe hotspots resulting in bold areas near her tail and hind
legs. I thought that these were the result of flea bites. However, when
I detoxified her from vaccines with homeopathy
and boosted her immune system with raw food,
kelp,
omega 3 fatty acids (found in chia seeds or oil,
fish
oil and/or flaxseed oil), and stopped all
drugging, she was able to heal beautifully and to withstand flea bites
without a bad reaction, even during the height of the flea season. click

Most Popular Natural Pet Products...
With
today's increasingly toxic environment, our pets are coming down with serious
and inexplicable health problems. A Pesticide collar is nothing but
a poison necklace around your pet’s head. It emits a constant toxic cloud
that your pet inhales, and so do you, every time you hug your pet. What
about those insecticidal flea and tick shampoos and powders, sprays and
dips? Could your pet be also suffering from from adverse reaction to certain
medications and vaccines? The best-selling drug known as Rimadyl, which
has enjoyed remarkable success as an anti-inflammatory medicine for pets,
has been found to be deadly for some dogs, as witnessed by the FDA
receiving more than 6,000 bad reaction reports about the drug manufactured
by Pfizer.
Learn about safe, organic, non
toxic flea treatments
Dr.
Brandon Brooks, DVM - "Many (if not most) Over The Counter (OTC)
or non-prescription flea control products
are very toxic to cats and kittens- especially the ones only
approved for use in dogs. Many people mistakenly buy these for their pet
(it's not always their fault, the companies that make them want you to
buy it, they don't really care about the dangers involved) so it pays to
be extra careful when buying flea control products." more
Dr. Michael
W. Fox DVM - "The holistic approach to flea and tick control
detailed below helps reduce the need to give cats and dogs potentially
harmful new anti-flea and tick medicines (as pills, spot/drops on the skin,
sprays, dips and collars). These new medicines do not eliminate ticks and
fleas, and when there are many, the additional control measures detailed
below must be adopted anyway. Any and all control measures are jeopardized
when cats and dogs are allowed out to roam free in the neighborhood. Collars
are especially risky since the chemicals are inhaled as well as
absorbed by the animals and anyone sitting close to and petting the animal,
especially children. These systemic insecticides that variously kill and
disrupt the development of these and other parasites have to be ingested
by ticks and fleas for them to work. This means that they must have at
least one meal of the animal’s blood before getting the poisons in the
medicated pet’s blood into their systems. Hence these new treatments do
not stop infected ticks from transmitting Lyme
disease, and also Ehrlichiosis, Q-fever, Babesiosis, Tick paralysis,
and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, or fleas from spreading the plague and
Murine typhus or from causing allergic hot-spots in animals allergic to
the insects’ saliva. The convenience of using these new anti-flea and tick
meds should be weighed against the risks to the animals. Any animal showing
any adverse reaction---lethargy, nervousness/irritability, nausea, poor
coordination, and more severe neurological symptoms, should be taken off
the drug at once. Very young, aged, sick and nursing animals may be especially
at risk, and those who have been recently vaccinated, since these drugs
could compound any adverse effects of vaccinations
on the immune and neuro-endocrine systems of companion animals.

Products Intended to Kill Fleas
and Ticks Can Also Poison Pets and The People Who Handle Them
Each year, millions of people purchase flea and tick products believing
that these products have been thoroughly tested and are safe for both pets
and their caregivers. The main active ingredient in Bio Spot is a pesticide
known as Permethrin (it is used in more than 18 similar products,
including Bayer K9 Advantix, Defend EXspot, and Hartz Control OneSpot).
It kills insects by paralyzing their nervous system (that is also how nerve
gas works). However, it cannot distinguish between an insect's nervous
system, a dog's nervous system, or a human's nervous system. Children especially
are at rish of acute poisoning and long-term health effects. Learn
about Safe and Effective alternative of pest control.
Spot-On Pesticides such
as Frontline, Zodiac, Defend, Bio Spot, Adams and Advantage trigger adverse
reactions in dogs and cats, shorten life spans, cause terminal illness,
and premature death.
"Fleas, like all parasites, prey on the weak,
sick, and malnourished. An animal infested with fleas is an unhealthy
animal, and while the fleas certainly worsen this ill health, they do not
cause it. Poor-quality, inappropriate diets cause parasite infestations,
as do unsanitary conditions and all forms of stress. By knocking out the
flea, whether with insecticides, nematodes, or hormones, you have done
nothing to solve the root problem of ill health. The first and most essential
step is to improve your animals' health and vitality. The single best way
to do this is to feed them a diet based on nature,
rather than a highly processed commercial food. This single step is 99
percent of the battle, and yet is the one most people don't want to consider
when looking for an alternative to pesticides."
In 1932, Dr. Francis Pottenger conducted an experiment
involving 900 cats over four generations, to determine the effect of cooked
foods in cats. For 10 years, Pottenger
fed half of the cats a diet of raw foods, the other half a diet of cooked
foods. At the conclusion of his study, he reported that the cats who were
fed raw foods appeared to be in better health. In addition, the exclusively
cooked diet led to congenital problems including birth defects and deformities,
after several generations. Dr. Francis M. Pottenger's nutritional studies
have shown that the group fed raw meat were fit and healthy throughout
the ten year trial period. These cats were resistant
to fleas and other parasites and also to infections. The group fed
a regular diet of cooked or canned meat had a lot of problems in health,
breeding, behaviour and premature mortality. learn

Before
I learned about the fabulous all natural Cedar
Oil flea and tick control, (Nov '08) I rubbed pure
neem oil or cream on my dogs' skin during flea season with excellent
result but it left his coat oily. Neem oil seems to also help heal skin
irritation, eruptions and hotspots. I also found that rubbing plain
flaxseed
oil on areas where the skin is scaly or unhealthy does wonders to promote
healing of the skin.. Now I just spray the all natural totally safe Cedar
Oil product all over my dog which leaves his coat fluffy (not
sticky), shiny and with a lovely clean fresh smell.
Here's another recipe
I used a few years ago to protect my dogs from fleas and help heal hot
spots: in a 16 ounce bottle, I mix 1 to 2 ounces of Neem
oil, emu
oil and/or jojoba
oil, some extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil and just a few drops
or half a dram of tea
tree oil, To this, I add a tablespoon of golden
seal extract. I fill the rest of the bottle 1/2 with organic
white vinegar and water. I mix all ingredients well and massage the
mixture into the entire surface of the skin or just the affected areas.
I do NOT rinse. l usually do this once or twice a week, depending
on the severity of the skin condition or flea outbreak. For severe hot
spots, I may apply the mixutre 2 to 4 times a day on these spots.
( The only drawback is the tea
tree oil's strong odor.).
I don't use shampoo on my
dogs. Instead I use bentonite or Red Desert™ clay
which I mix with water into a thin paste. I wet my dog thoroughly, then
I brush the clay into the fur and massage it in the skin for a few minutes.
Then I rinse off lightly. In her marvelous book, Wild
Health: How Animals Keep Themselves Well and What We Can Learn From Them,,
Cindy Engles, Ph.D. describes how animals in the wild roll into clay mud
to heal themselves when sick or to repel insects.
In 1992, my 2 year old dog,
Shasta,
was plagued with flea bites and hot spots (an area that is inflamed, bleeding,
oozing, and hairless.) She was not alone to suffer miserably from itching
and burning. Her doggie friends in the neighborhood were suffering just
as much.
I began doing research
to try to help her and I learned that our dog's and cat's skin problems
are often vaccine induced. Many veterinarians
believe that vaccines are causing harms to our beloved pets, from skin
allergies to cancer and other chronic disease referred to as "vaccinosis".
Homeopathic
veterinarians recommend a treatment with homeopathic remedies to remove
toxins and side effects of vaccines. I also learned that our
soil, plants, and especially commercial foods are woefully deficient in
key nutrients. Scientists theorize that mineral deficiency subjects
us, and our animals, to more diseases, aging, sickness and destruction
of our physical well-being than any other factor in personal health.
I decided to feed my dogs
RAW food. (sample diet) and to supplement
their diet with flaxseed oil (linseed oil), chia
seeds, kelp
and
fulvic
minerals and/or marine phytoplankton (consist
of an immense arsenal and array of naturally occuring powerful phytochemicals,
biochemicals, supercharged antioxidants, free-radical scavengers, super
oxide dismutases, nutrients, enzymes, hormones, amino acids, antibiotics,
antivirals, and antifungals), and bee pollen rich
in naturally occuring vitamins. I also treated them with
homeopathic remedies. I saw nice improvement in a matter of weeks.
If fleas begin to bother
my dogs occasionally during the hot summer time and they begin to bite
or scrach herself, I give them homeopathic remedies and a product named
Transfer
Factor which help boost their immune system and offers her a better
resistance to flea attacks. The homeopathic remedies I use are Pullex
Irritans 6c and sulphur 30c. Occasionally I also used Calcarea
carbonica 30C or 200C.
Homeopathic
remedies for pets
I place a single pellet of
the sulphur 30c in the water bowl ONE TIME ONLY and I wait a few weeks
to see the result. Sulphur is very powerful and if used too much or too
often can cause a healing crisis.
Depending
on the animal and the situation sometimes sulphur may not resolve the problem.
If they continue to have flea bites allergies, I add in the water bowl
one pellet of pullex once everyday for a week or two. Usually those
two remedies solve the problem. (pullex is the latin name for flea. It
is a homeopathic remedy made from the flea itself)

Vinegar
for Flea Bites and other skin condition
"Vinegar is a naturally occurring germ killer and is one of the very
first medicines known to man. It was used as a healing dressing on wounds
and infectious sores in Biblical times, and it is credited with saving
the lives of thousands of soldiers during the Civil War. It was used routinely
as a disinfectant on wounds. It kills germs on contact and it contains
bacteria which is unfriendly to infectious micro-organisms. It is a natural
remedy and most of all, it is safe. Vinegar is particularly useful for
neutralizing alkali burns. And it relieves itchy skin too. We coat the
'hot spots' with vinegar, full strength, using a cotton ball or poured
directly from the bottle. For a full body treatment, add four cups of vinegar
to the bath water. Be careful not to get the vinegar/water mixture in the
ears and eyes. The vinegar/water rinses are a quick remedy to relieve minor
skin irritations such as hives, chigger bites, other insect bites and rashes."

Note from Shirley:
I have received a few testimonials from people who use organic white or
red vinegar internally and externally for their animals, including horses,
for flea bites and other minor skin irritation such as hives, etc. I have
never used vinegar on or for my animals and cannot verify the validity
of these statements. If you decide to use vinegar, it is important to only
use only organic white or red vinegar because some commercial vinegars
are made from wood pulp. Here is one testimonial:
"Animals need not suffer from flea bites at all. For years our dogs
suffered from flea bites. We washed them with flea shampoos, powdered them
with flea powders, bombed the house with aerosols, flea collars, etc.
A friend told us about a method his grandmother used that was very effective.
Take a gallon of water, add four to six teasoons of white vinegar to it,
and give it to your pets as their only drinking water. If they have a water
dish outside, use this water for that as well. During the winter ( ohio)
, I give them four tsps.. during the summer ( flea season ) I give them
six tsps. We havn't seen a flea in over ten years. It works on any animal.
We have a dog ( seven years old ) that has never seen a flea. All of these
commercial flea preparations are bad for the health of our pets. We had
a dog living with us temporarily that had lived in North Carolina for awhile,
that was almost eaten alive by fleas down there. We gave her vinegar water
and all of her problems disappeared. I live in the Cleveland Ohio area."

Ear
Inflammation - Infection - Odor - Wax build up
Warning!
Dennis W. Thomas, DVM
- "As a pet owner, it is important to know that persistent or recurring
ear infections in a dog commonly are manifestations of other concurring
disease processes. Allergies and hypothyroidism are good examples. Systemic
allergies often cause dermatitis and itching in the ear canal, which predispose
self-trauma and subsequent ear infection. Hypothyroidism may manifest itself
as increased thickness of the skin and continual release of exudate in
the ear canal, which favors an environment for otitis externa. It
is not wise to use cotton tip applicators in the ear canal. This can be
quite painful to the dog. Also, I don't recommend using alcohol in a dog's
ear. Alcohol will dry the ear, but if there is inflammation
or small scratches in the canal, the alcohol will burn and cause tremendous
pain and further inflammation. If you must use a product from the shelf
at home, use white vinegar diluted 50:50 with water.

Why I won't use
the Elizabethan collar on my animals. The Elizabethan collar
is a type of plastic collar that is effective in preventing pets from licking
or biting themselves. The only time I will use such collar is to prevent
my animal from tearing up surgical sutures, until healing is complete.
I will never use such collar to prevent my dog or cat from licking
skin eruptions, hot spots, or inflammed and infected area on their
bodies. The built in germicide found in the saliva of a dog or a
cat amazingly heals wounds in record time. Any injuries are carefully licked
and coated with antiseptic saliva from the tongue. This aids in preventing
infection entering into a wound. Learn more
Mange
Many normal dogs carry the mange parasite. Holistic veterinarians believe
that it becomes a problem and spreads through the skin when there are immune
problems, inherited skin defects or illness for other reasons. Holistic
treatments aim to improve the general health, particularly the immune system,
and to homeopathically treat the inherited factors.
Dr. Will Falconer DVM - "Demodectic mange mites are common flora
in man and animals. Reread that if you think this is a typo, because it’s
a fact: we all have demodectic mites as residents on our skin. Why aren’t
we all itchy and broken out with eruptions? Only one reason: the immune
system keeps these parasites in check. So, when a dog is diagnosed with
demodectic mange, and he’s got crusty patches around his face or toes or
all over, what that means, first and foremost, is that his immune system
needs help! Unfortunately, the common treatment is to dip the affected
dogs in very toxic chemicals to kill the mites. So toxic, in fact, that
the personnel dipping the dog wear rubber gloves and aprons! This has never
made sense to me, as we know poisons have a clearly detrimental effect
on the immune system. Wouldn’t it make more sense to strengthen the immune
system and thereby get the normal flora of mites back in control? It can
be done, and Transfer
Factor Plus Advanced Formula would be the best course, along with
Canine Complete. For the average 40 - 60 lb dog, I’d start with Animal
Stress Pack at recommended doses for two weeks. Then, follow this with
Canine Complete at label doses and add the Transfer Factor Plus Advanced
Formula at two capsules twice a day. To discourage mites topically, paint
on lavender essential oil, diluted 1:10 with almond oil. This can be applied
twice a day. Be sure to avoid the eyes, however. You’ll need to give this
regimen time, from at least a few weeks to a few months. And, again, don’t
short change nutrition, avoid vaccines, and work with your homeopathic
veterinarian to improve health and cure the underlying illness that allowed
the immune system to get so sluggish."

Your Animal's Immune System and Overall Health with Nutritional Support
Immune Support in Pets (for Healthier Skin)
Dr. Shawn Messonnier DVM, author, The
Natural Health Bible for Dogs and Cats, Prima, 2001
One of the most common questions I get is this: "What do you recommend
to boost my pet's immune system?" Using nutritional supplements to boost
the immune system in times of illness is very important for any sick pet.
While supplements can be used to support the immune system during any
illness, I am most often asked to prescribe something for pets with the
following problems: any infectious disease (especially feline respiratory
disease, kennel cough, distemper;) cancer; mange; and any condition in
older pets that just "aren't acting quite right." In this article, I'll
discuss some of the more commonly used immune-boosting supplements, along
with recommendations on how to keep your pet's immune system acting as
healthy as possible all year long.
Antioxidants
are among the most commonly used supplements to help pets with a variety
of medical disorders. Antioxidants are specific vitamins (such as vitamin
C and vitamin E) and plant and animal compounds (bioflavonoids such as
grape seed extract, quercetin, coenzyme Q-10, ginkgo biloba) that are responsible
for maintaining health.
Echinacea
(Echinacea purpurea, E. angustifolia, E. pallida) is the most commonly
known immune stimulant which also functions as an antimicrobial (antiviral
and antibacterial) herb. In people, echinacea is the number-one cold and
flu herbal remedy. Currently, to prevent long term immune system problems,
most doctors recommend using echinacea for a short period of time (3-4
weeks) followed by a resting period (3-4 weeks) before the herb is resumed.
Maintaining a Healthy Immune System While supplements
can be used in times of illness, maintaining a healthy immune system important
in decreasing the incidence and severity of disease. Follow the following
tips to keep your pet as healthy as possible.
Feed the most natural diet possible. Learn to read a pet food label and
avoid foods with chemical preservatives (BHT, BHA, ethoxyquin) and animal
and plant by-products that can damage a pet's immune system and do not
help maintain health as much as foods with natural preservatives and no
by-products. When possible, prepare and feed a homemade diet (using on
of the recipes in The Natural Health Bible for Dogs and Cats) to ensure
thatyour pet is eating the healthiest food possible.
Minimize vaccines. Most pets do not need annual "shots." A simple blood
test called a titer test can determine which vaccines you pet needs.
Minimize chemicals. I prefer not to use chemical flea prevention products
unless absolutely needed. Monthly heartworm medication is preferred over
the 6 month injectable heartworm preventive.
Administer whole food vitamin and mineral supplements, antioxidants, and
omega-3 fatty acids to maintain a healthy body.
Administer choline supplementation to prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer's
disease (cognitive disorder) in dogs and cats 10 years of age and older.
A groundswell of nutrition conscious veterinarians are beginning to recommend
to their clients that they also supplement their animals diet with a daily
dose of flaxseed oil and other important nutrients. When
the diets of animals were fortified with flax oil or chia
seeds, within three weeks their coats developed a beautiful sheen,
and dandruff was greatly diminished.

Success Using Immune Boosting Transfer Factor
Dr. Charles W. Brown, DVM - "My
colleagues and I have found this product (transfer factor)
to be very effective in modulating the immune system. Transfer factor is
a "soup" of immune-modulating factors, which contains a leukocyte-type
molecule that can passively transfer immunity from one mammal to another
by stimulating cell-mediated immunity and is antigen specific. Richard
Bennett, Ph.D., an Infectious Disease Microbiologist and Immunologist from
the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, believes
this could be the most significant development in animal health care in
decades. We have a great number of veterinarians and clients who are experiencing
very positive results in a broad area of disorders, including periodontal.
"
"I
started giving Transfer Factor Plus to my 11 year old dog, Shasta, after
she suffered series of illness since April 2001 - a mean abscess on her
jaw, VKS syndrome or toxoplasmosis, and just recently a stroke/paralysis.
She recovered with the help of homeopathic and herbal treatments, but these
illenesses had taken a toll on her energy and vitality. After a short time
on the Transfer Factor Plus, her energy level and
vitaliy improved remarkably and she is more frisky and playful. I also
noticed that she has completely stopped scratching or biting her skin and
she is much more relaxed." Shirley

RAW FOOD DIET AND FLEA BITES: as Shasta's health improved
with her raw food diet, her stronger
immune system gradually began to protect her against flea bites. I don't
know if fleas are repelled from her or if she simply no longer has the
allergic reaction to flea bites which causes most dogs to itch, scratch
and bite themselves. She has friends in the neighborhood who are miserably
plagued with flea bites. These dogs are on commercial pet food. When I
watched her and the other dogs together, the difference is striking. ((learn
why commercial pet food is adversly affecting your animal's health)
Hotspots - Mange: homeopathic treatment
Jeffrey Levy, DVM - "Simply killing the fleas will not be effective
in the long run in eliminating your pet's flea problem. There will always
be more fleas to replace those you kill. If, however, you are preparing
a high quality homemade diet, and you still need to apply the flea-killing
measures frequently, there is probably a more serious underlying problem
with your pet that requires homeopathic treatment."
Natural
Flea Control
Because hotspots (red, inflammed, itchy and oozing spot) and skin
allergies are often the result of vaccines' toxicity, I give my dogs the
appropriate homeopathic remedies to antidote the bad effects of vaccines.
These homeopathic medicine can be obtained from any
homeopathic veterinarians.
When I adopted Kuuma, he had one hotspot
on his left thigh, where he had been injected with vaccines. I immediately
gave him a single dose of the homeopathic remedy Lyssin 200 (hydrophobinum)
to antidote the rabie vaccine. Within a couple of weeks that hotspot had
completely healed. However, two weeks later, a new hotspot developped on
his right thigh. This time I gave him a single dose of thuja 200 to antidote
the other vaccines. I did not attempt to suppress the eczema that had developped
in that area with drugs or creams because I did not want to interfere with
his healing crisis.
A couple of months later, Kuuma appeared to have developped flea bites
reaction all over his body and was scratching and biting himself a lot.
However, I only found only a couple of fleas on him and I suspected
that his skin eruptions were the result of hypersensitiviy to flea bites
or that it was toxins discharging through the skin. I gave him one
pellet of the homeopathic remedy Sulphur 30c once a day for two days and
two weeks later I gave him Calcarea Carbonica 200c one single pellet, one
time only. I also rubbed on his skin my concoction
of tea
tree oil twice a week. Within a month, his skin cleared up and he stopped
scratching, even though this is August, the middle of the flea season.
Sulphur and Calc.carb. are known to be deep acting constitutional remedies.
His skin remains clear and he has stopped biting and scratching himself.
With my other dog, Shasta, it was an
entirely different case. The remedies I used with her would not be appropriate
for Kuuma and the remedies I used for Kuuma would not have bee appropriate
for Shasta. Homeopathic medicine only works on individual cases, depending
on the symptoms and constitution. That is why it is important to seek the
advice
and gudance of a professional homeopath or holistic veterinarian.
With Shasta, I obtained good result with Radium bromite, graphites and
hepar sulph remedies. First, I gave her a single dose (one pellet)
of Radium Bromatum 30 c potency. The remedy acted well and she remained
free of hot spot for the next 3 months. At that point, she had a little
flair up and I repeated radium brom a single dose.
I had to repeat radium (one pellet only) about every 6 to 9 months whenever
there was a flair up of her hot spot. Each time there was a nice improvement.
But when she had another severe flair up I decided to give another remedy:
'graphite' 200c potency, a single pellet. Again, she had a nice improvement
but the hotspot did not completely disapear. Several weeks later I choose
to give her 'hepar sulph' 1M potency and the results were immediate and
astonishing. Within days, her hot spot completely disappeared. I also noticed
that she became calmer and happier.
In the homeopathic materia medica (Desktop Guide by Roger Morrison)
graphites is listed for: unhealthy skin, (eczema, psoriasis, scales, urticaria),
eruption ooze a thick, yellow or "honey-like" fluid which dries into golden
crystal on the skin and Chronic (thick) discharges from the ears. This
matched Shasta's symptoms very well and that's why she responded so well
to it. Hepar sulph is also an excellent constitutional remedy which has
powerful action on skin problems.
About radium brom: In Boericke's materia medica, radium is listed under
"skin" Erythema and dermatitis with itching, burning, swelling, and redness.
Burning of skin as if afire. In another book I read that radium had been
successfully used for a sore, oozing patch of skin. (similar to graphites).
There are many other homeopathic remedies for dermatitis or skin irritation
and inflammation. I happened to choose the above ones according to her
specific constitution and symptoms. Please read the following message.
Important
message about Homeopathic treatment - It is not a good idea to purchase
radium brom and graphites and treat your animal on your own. The reason?
A dozen dogs with similar hot spots would probably require each a DIFFERENT
HOMEOPATHIC REMEDY. A specific homeopathic remedy that works well for one
animal may not get the same results for another animal. That's because
unlike allopathic medicine, a homeopathic remedy must be specifically selected
according to the individuality and totality of symptoms of your animal
as well as its overall constitution.
While it is true that homeopathy
is safe and non toxic, you have to be VERY careful with radium brom or
with other homeopathic remedies because if you are not familiar with homeopathy
and how to use it you could make matters temporarily worse for your animal.
It takes only a TINY AMOUNT of homeopathy to get results. "More"
does not mean "better" with homeopathy.
If you want to use homeopathy
for your animal I strongly recommend that you seek a consultation with
a holistic or homeopathic veterinarian in your hometown. If there are no
such vet where you live you can always seek a telephone
consultation with a holistic vet or a consultant. A phone consultation
can be just as effective as an office consultation, especially if you already
have a diagnosis of your animal's condition. Homeopathy can achieve incredible
results with all types of chronic or acute disease. You can place a search
on the internet for a holistic vet or a homeopathic vet or you can choose
one in the list I have compiled or you may also

WHAT
CAN WE DO ABOUT SKIN PROBLEMS IN CATS AND DOGS?
by Dr. Anna Maria Gardner
"...Skin problems are the tip of the iceberg, and represent a body that
is overstressed by the accumulation of years of toxins, vaccinations and
poor diet. The problem is really an immune system that just cannot cope
with the environment we are living in. I believe that vaccinations, especially
the rabies vaccines, are contributing to a lot of the "allergic" skin problems
seen today, leading to a problem known as vaccinosis, which is characterized
by itchy, dark, thickened skin; especially over the abdomen and under the
legs. It is seen in both dogs and cats, but is more obvious in the dog.
While we have to continue to vaccinate our dogs and cats against rabies
for public health reasons, there are things we can do to at least minimize
the effects of the vaccine on the body.
One thing is to give a dose of the homeopathy remedy Lyssin 30 C, which
is made from the saliva of a rabid dog, using the premise that like treats
like, which is the basis of homeopathy. This should be given as soon as
possible after the rabies shot to try and prevent the development of any
reactions to the shot. Once the skin problems are evident, it is worth
trying a dose of Thuja 6 C every day to also remove the effects of the
vaccine from the body, as this is very often needed before other homeopathic
treatment can be started. Other homeopathic remedies may be needed, as
prescribed by a licensed veterinarian, and are very often helpful in cases
of chronic allergies, and can replace the use of steroids in many cases.
A good general approach to skin problems is therefore to consider them
the results of a body loaded with toxins, and anything that can be done
to reduce this load will help the animal. So a good natural diet is often
the single most useful thing that can be done, as discussed in an earlier
edition of this magazine. This will often make a big difference and is
well worth trying before resorting to steroids, or other drugs. The use
of a good filtered water source or high quality spring water can also help,
as can purifying the air in the home your pet lives in. Replace the use
of dips, sprays and all strong chemicals to control fleas and ticks
with natural flea control. It is a fact that when your pet becomes healthier,
and on a better diet and preventative health regime, they will be better
able to repel the fleas and not become totally infested. If we can strengthen
the immune system, then we can help the body to heal itself, not suppress
it further with steroids and strong drugs.
The addition of supplements to the diet is also necessary to also enhance
immune function." more

Holistic Animal Health and Optimum
Pet Nutrition
A growing number of veterinarians state that processed pet food is
the main cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog and cat.
In December 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal Practice published
a paper contending that processed pet food supresses the immune system
and leads to liver, kidney, heart and other diseases. Dr. Kollath, of the
Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, headed a study done on animals. When
young animals were fed cooked and processed foods they initially appeared
to be healthy. However, as the animals reached adulthood, they began to
age more quickly than normal and also developed chronic degenerative disease
symptoms. A control group of animals raised on raw foods aged less quickly
and were free of degenerative disease. For a return to health, pets require
a diet which strengthens the immune system and most closely resembles that
which they would get in the wild. It's really easy to do. more
