Are
You Poisoning Your Pet with Toxic Flea and Tick Products?
Each year, Americans purchase and apply to their pets a vast array
of toxic chemicals intended to kill fleas and ticks. These include collars,
sprays,
dusts
and more. Other pet owners take their pets to veterinarians to be dipped
in chemicals. Many consumers probably assume that the products they
and their vets use have been subjected to rigorous testing, and must,
by virtue of their very ubiquity, be safe. After all, how could the
government let deadly poisons be sold on grocery store
shelves
without applying stringent standards?
Spot-On Pesticides such as Frontline, Zodiac, ProMeris,
Defend, Bio Spot, Adams and Advantage
trigger adverse reactions in dogs and cats, shorten life spans, cause
terminal illness, and premature death. . The active ingredients
in these solutions include chemicals such as imidacloprid, fipronil,
permethrin, methoprene, and pyriproxyfen, all of which have caused serious
health problems in animals in laboratories.2 Even some of the inert
ingredients can be hazardous to your animal companion;s health. Other
forms of flea control powders, collars, and spraysare no less dangerous
to you or your companion animals. Labels may warn not to get these substances
on your skin, to wash your hands after applying it, and to keep it away
from children, yet these chemicals are absorbed by your animal;s skin.
Immediate effects of pesticide overdose include vomiting, diarrhea,
trembling, seizures, and respiratory problems. If your dog or cat shows
any of these symptoms after the application of a pesticide, immediately
wash the product off and seek veterinary care.
"I just wanted to add a warning about ProMeris. I applied it to my
2 1/2 year old Australian Shepherd this morning. Shortly after lunch,
I noticed she was staggering, barely able to walk at all. Her head was
hanging & she couldn't lift it up. She tried to look at me but couldn't
focus. I immediately called my Veterinarian. I was instructed to wash
her immediately and thoroughly with dish soap and then bring her to
their office. By the time we got there, she had improved greatly just
by removing the product. You could see the flaming red reaction to her
skin on the spot where it was applied. They gave her charcoal to fill
her tummy and stop any absorption in case she had scratched at the spot,
then licked her feet, and had ingested any of the product. I'm sure
that she didn't ingest any, but was willing to err on the side of caution.
The vet explained that there is a drug in it called amitraz that is
very potent and it was what she reacted to and that she would not use
ProMeris. She is now fine. After Googling ProMeris adverse reactions,
I feel very fortunate that she lived. Many others were not as fortunate.
Please post this so that maybe it can save even one unsuspecting pet
lover from going through this or worse" Joanne, Aledo Tx

EPA: "Flea, tick products may injure, kill pets"
Washington - March 24, 2010 -
Products intended to treat cats and dogs for fleas and ticks kill hundreds of pets each year and injure tens
of thousands, the Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday as it outlined plans to make the products safer. The EPA said
it will develop stricter testing and evaluation requirements for flea and tick treatments that are applied to a pet's skin.
The agency also will begin reviewing labels to determine which ones need to say more clearly how to use the products. The EPA's
effort follows increasing complaints from pet owners that the "spot-on" products have triggered reactions in dogs and cats,
ranging from skin irritation to neurological problems to deaths. Cats and small dogs appear particularly vulnerable, the EPA
said, especially when given products intended for larger animals.

Dr. Pat Bradley, DVM, Conway, USA - "The most common problems I see that are directly
related to vaccines on a day to day
basis are ear or skin conditions, such as chronic discharges and itching.
I also see behaviour problems such as fearfulness or aggression. Often
guardians will
report
that these begin shortly after vaccination, and are exacerbated with
every vaccine. In a more general and frightening context, I see the
overall health and longevity of animals deteriorating. The bodies of
most animals have a tremendous capacity to detoxify poisons, but they
do have a limit. I think we often exceed that limit and over-whelm the
body's immune system function with toxins from vaccines,
poor quality foods, insecticides,
environmental toxins, etc. This is why we've seen such a dramatic increase
in allergies, organ
failures, and behaviour problems." (NOTE: a growing number of holistic
veterinarians use
Transfer Factor before and after vaccination to minimize the side effects
and help the animal recover)
Dr. Blanco, D.V.M - "You take healthy animals and often very
quickly after you vaccinate, you can see simple
things like itching of the skin or excessive licking of the paws, sometimes
even with no eruptions. We see a lot of
epilepsy, often
after a rabies vaccination. Or dogs or cats can become aggressive for
several days. Frequently, you'll see urinary
tract infections in cats, often within three months after their
[annual] vaccination. If you step back, open your mind and heart, you'll
start to see patterns of illness post-vaccination."

Dr.
Brandon Brooks, DVM - "Many (if not most) Over The Counter (OTC)

kittens- especially the ones only approved for use in dogs. Many people
mistakenly buy these for their pet (it's not always their fault, the
companies that make them want you to buy it, they don't really care
about the dangers involved) so it pays to be extra careful when buying

CHLORINATED
and FLUORIDATED WATER.... A BIG NO-NO !!! There is a perception
among many people that bottled water is somehow more healthy or pure
than water from their tap. This is simply an illusion of marketing.
A four-year study by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC),
released in 1999, found that one-fifth of the sampled bottled waters
contained known neurotoxins and carcinogens such as styrene, toluene
and xylene. Another NRDC study found that, out of 103 brands of bottled
water, one-third contained traces of arsenic and E. coli. This means
that out of a sample of 1,000 bottles sold in the U.S., at least 300
would have some level of chemical contamination. It is well known that
the average city water today contains over 500 chemicals that do not
belong in it. Part of this is due to the fact that most delivery systems
in the U.S. include cement, asbestos pipes, cast iron, PVC (porous to
certain solvents, herbicides and pesticides) and that lead, cadmium
and other toxic metals leach out of valves and couplings of pipes between
a water treatment plant and a faucet in the home.
Why Purified and Distilled
Bottled Water are Bad For You and Your Animals
Safe, toxin-free, Ionized, Energized,
Drinking Water helps to naturally flush toxins and acidic waste
from the body and is a powerful antioxidant. Ionized Water makes more
oxygen available to our cells than distilled, reverse osmosis, filtered

Chris Sweeney, who used to own a 9-year-old cocker spaniel named
Ari, said she never would have used the drugs if she had been aware
of the possible side effects. "I went from having a healthy dog to having
a dog that had to be rushed to the hospital and they said he might die
on the way," Sweeney said, adding that she believes Metacam is responsible
for Ari's death.
Boston veterinarian Dr. Margo Roman said she feels cases such as
Ari's are the tip of the iceberg. "There's liver issues, there can be
kidney issues, there can be gastrointestinal irritation issues," Roman
said, adding that she would never prescribe these NSAIDs to her patients
or use them on her own dog. Pet owners do not have to turn to potentially
harmful prescription drugs for their pets' health, however.
Natural options are available. Health advocate
Mike Adams says that pet health, like human health, mostly comes down
to proper nutrition, although
he noted a pet's dietary
needs were specific.
"It is tragic, although not surprising, that so many beloved pets
are falling victim to these side effects," said Adams, co-author of
the "Real
Safety Guide to Pet Health" with Dawn Prate. "These drug companies
are just interested in making a buck, and the FDA is just interested
in protecting their financial interests, so of course they are going
to say the medicine is safe if used properly. What they don't mention
is that these drugs should only be used as an absolute last resort or
if your pet sustains an injury, not as part of a lifestyle."The bottom
line is: The healthiest thing you can do for your pet is love it, feed
it properly, and keep prescription drugs as far away from it as possible,"
he said.
Chocolate Toxic to Dogs?
Chocolate is toxic to dogs, specifically semisweet baking
chocolate, which contains much higher levels of caffeine and theobromine
(the principle alkaloid used in the synthesis of caffeine) than does
milk chocolate. That's not to say milk chocolate isn't dangerous. With
its high fat content, it can lead to pancreatitis in pets. Pure chocolate
contains theobromine and caffeine, which are both compounds called methylxanthines.
They are hazardous to pets, causing seizures in severe cases. According
to snopes.com, cocoa mulch has one of the highest concentrations
of theobromine found. It actually smells like chocolate, and is attractive
to dogs. Reportedly most dogs will not actually eat it though. Cats
are at lower risk mainly because they are even less likely to eat the
mulch than dogs.
One study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association
confirmed that a dog died due to ingestion of a substantial amount of
cocoa mulch. And in the Journal of Agriculturaland Food Chemistry,
a scientist reports on the potential use of theobromine and caffeine
for "controlling" (that is, killing) pest coyotes. Coyotes being close
relatives to dogs, this should cause concern for anyone considering
using cocoa mulch in an area their pets have access to.
Chlorinated water can cause serious animal health problems.
"Chlorine is a halogen that damages enzymes. It does not belong in
our bodies as part of our water needs!! For starters, chlorine potentiates
magnesium deficiency, which can cause almost
any symptom you can think of from high blood pressure, to chemical sensitivity
or even sudden death. Furthermore it also decreases the absorption while
increasing the excretion of calcium and phosphorus. The increased loss
of calcium into the urine, promotes osteoporosis. It is known that it
not only contributes to hypertension, but also cancers of the pancreas,
colon, bladder and has been linked to heart attacks, diabetes, kidney
stones and much more. "
"To make matters worse for pets, some people still use plastic water
bowls. Most, if not all, of these absorb and retain numerous toxic materials."
Dr. Christopher Day (England) reports..."I once had an epileptic
dog I had been treating unsuccessfully for eighteen months. One day
its plastic feeding bowl was accidentally broken and replaced with a
ceramic one. The fits stopped immediately."

Cancer fighting nutrients become deadly when
combined with chlorinated tap water
Some of nature;s most valuable and essential anti-cancer and anti-disease
phytochemical nutrients which are commonly found in food have been discovered
to form deadly cancer causing substances when consumed or combined with
chlorinated tap water. This discovery includes familiar foods
including soy, fruits, vegetables, tea, many health products, and even
some vitamins. Research has proven that these essential nutrients are
the exact same families of compounds, that even in infinitesimal amounts
have been tormenting the water treatment and chlorine industries for
years.
Fluoride in Water: Wide Range
of Serious Health Problems
"In 1990 a 10 year study was completed by the federal government National
Toxicology Program (a part of the Department of Health and Human Services)
to rule out any possibility that fluoride causes cancer. Much to their
surprise, bone tumors found in laboratory animals were found to be the
direct result of fluoride ingestion. Even before the study was complete,
the NTP contacted the Environmental Protection Agency to inform them
that fluoride was carcinogenic."
Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, M.D. - " Water has the ability to attract
and accumulate bio-energy. It also stores an energy memory of harmful
or helpful vibrations to which it was exposed in the past. Chlorinated
tap water is polluted with non-biological chemicals and negative energy
imprints. It is also devoid of bio-energy and so may be regarded as
being badly polluted as well as 'dead'.

Subject: Dog's recover from Auto Immune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA)
Date: Sunday, October 12, 2003
From: Dave Burrows in Eastbourne, United Kingdom
slartibartfast@2cuk.co.uk
My dog Arnie had been given up on by the vet. He had acute anaemia
caused by his white blood cells killing his red ones and quite honestly
we were making arrangements for his funeral. After one week on
Transfer Factor we noticed a dramatic improvement.
Three months later, after finishing the entire course, Arnie is doing
so well that he no longer needs Transfer Factor . He now has so much
energy on his new diet (James welbeloved) that we have to restrict his
intake or we could be pulling him off the ceiling. He is putting on
weight steadily as is his partner Heidi, She has been on Transfer Factor
also and it has cured her scaly flaky skin condition on her back.
Note: AIHA Canine autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a disease
characterized by increased destruction of red blood cells (erythrocytes)
by the dog's own immune system.
Dr. Rob Robertson, M.D writes "Nearly everything that goes
wrong with us and our pets, with the exception of trauma - i.e. broken
bones, etc., can be traced directly to an immune system failure". Pollution,
drug overload and nutrient-poor diets compromise our immune health.
The key to self-healing is a strong defense system, which protects dogs
and cats from everything from the flu germs to cancer cells. More than
their mainstream counterparts, holistic veterinarians believe that a
weak immune system plays a key role
in causing disease. Drugs aren't the answer for immune enhancement.
The immune system is not responsive to drugs for healing. Antibiotics
fight infection, but they don't affect whatever weakened the immune
system in the first place. This is why holistic veterinarians focus
less on things that cause diseases and more on those that affect the
body's defenses"

Rimadyl Risk-Be

From the
Doris Day Animal League Foundation
The best-selling drug known as Rimadyl, an anti-inflammatory medicine
for pets, has been found to be deadly for many animals, as witnessed
by the FDA receiving more than 6,000 bad reaction reports about the
drug manufactured by Pfizer. As a result, the FDA requested that Pfizer
advise consumers in their advertising that death was a possible side
effect. Pfizer refused and pulled their advertising, however they have
included "death" as a possible side effect on the drug label. Plans
call for a "Dear Doctor" letter to be issued to veterinarians and a
safety sheet will be attached to pill packages.
Pfizer acknowledges a problem with some dog owners, especially the
consumer group which mounted a campaign dubbed BARKS, for Be Aware of
Rimadyl's Known Side-effects (including loss of appetite, wobbling,
vomiting, seizures and severe liver malfunction). The drug company is
reported to be contacting pet owners who have told their stories on
the Internet, and is offering to pay medical and diagnostic expenses
for some dogs who may have been harmed by Rimadyl.

"Greenies"
Danger!
Consumer Investigation exposes a potentially deadly problem involving
one of the most popular dog treats on the market. Millions of dogs chew
on the treats every day, and there's a good chance your pooch is one
of them. Consumer Investigator Wayne Havrelly discovered the danger.
These dog treats are called "Greenies." They're sold in stores everywhere.
Mike Eastwood and his wife, Jenny Reiff, filed a $5 million lawsuit
in New York, blaming Greenies for the intestinal blockage that caused
the death of their dog Burt. Burt did not die because he bit off a big
piece in his throat and choked, but because the treats are NOT 100%
digestable as they are advertised to be. They can swell in the intestine
and cause a blockage like the one that resulted in Burt's death. Supervising
a dog while they eat any greenie type treats is not an assurance of
safety.
"I just wanted to tell you about my "Greenie" experience. I have
a border collie, my pride and joy . In 2004 , Morgan ( my BC ), was
given a greenie...just one, And shortly after he had a pretty good seisure.
i just knew it was the treat, so I asked my vet, who said greenies did
not cause the seisure. A year later, I bought him one for christmas,
this time he had six intense seisures, by the time they were over ,
he couldnt remember his name . Although I could not find anyone who
would admit a connection to Greenies then, now I am finding others who
have experienced the same thing. He has never seen a greenie since and
never had another seisure. After finding your web site, I thought you
may find this interesting. Bad Greenies!"

Food Additive Potentially Deadly To Pets
Vets Warn Owners To Keep Sugar-Free Away From Pets
JAVMA - September 1, 2004
Sugar-free treats could be harmful to dogs - The American Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Animal Poison Control Center
is warning veterinarians, their staff, and pet owners that the xylitola
sweetener found in some sugar-free chewing gums, candies, and other
products can cause seriouspossibly life-threatening problems for dogs.
The American Society for the Prevention of Dogs ingesting large amounts
of products sweetened with xylitol may have a sudden drop in blood sugar,
resulting depression, loss of coordination, and seizures, according
to Dr. Eric K. Dunayer, a consulting veterinarian in clinical toxicology
for the poison control center. The center is most concerned about products
in which xylitol is the primary ingredient. The American Society for
the Prevention of "These signs can develop quite rapidly, at times less
than 30 minutes after ingestion of the product," Dr. Dunayer said in
a statement. "Therefore, it is important that pet owners seek veterinary
treatment immediately." Some data suggest a link between xylitol ingestion
and liver failure in dogs, he said, though those data are insufficient
to draw firm conclusions. Dr. Dunayer published a case study on xylitol
toxicosis in April 2004 issue of the journal Veterinary and Human Toxicology.
The
Bitter Truth About NutraSweet (Aspartame) and Sucralose (Splenda)
Ralph Walton, M.D. - "Aspartame (NutraSweet) appears to cause
slow, silent damage in those unfortunate enough to not have immediate
reactions and a reason to avoid it. It may take one year, five years,
10 years, or 40 years, but it seems to cause some reversible and some
irreversible changes in health over long-term use. "Aspartame has a
profound effect on mood and cognition....depressed mood, anxiety, dizziness,
panic attacks, nausea, irritability, impairment of memory and concentration."
Dr. Janet Starr Hull - "The testing of sucralose reveals that
it can cause up to 40 percent shrinkage of the thymus: a gland that
is the very foundation of our immune system. Sucralose also causes swelling
of the liver and kidneys, and CALCIFICATION of the kidney. Note: if
you experience kidney pain, cramping, or an irritated bladder after
using sucralose in Splenda, stop use immediately."

Popular sweetener is toxic for dogs
A sugar substitute found in a variety of sugar-free and dietetic cookies,
mints and chewing gum is proving highly toxic, even fatal, to snack-snatching
dogs. Xylitol, popular in Europe for decades but a relative newcomer
to the U.S. alternative-sweeteners market, can be "very, very serious"
to dogs when ingested, says Dana Farbman, spokeswoman for the Animal
Poison Control Center of the American Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals. "It doesn't take a whole lot (of xylitol), and the
effects are so rapid that the window of opportunity to treat the dog
is extremely small," Farbman says. learn more

Malpractice - Protecting Your Pet from Veterinarian Negligence
The (Delaware) News Journal reported that over the last few years
there has been a growing national trend to give animals more legal protection:
New legislation and lawsuits have been filed across the country on behalf
of animals. Several lawsuits against veterinarians aim to change laws
that treat pets as property and leave vets unaccountable for malpractice.
New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Rhode Island have considered
legislation granting pet owners the right to sue for pain and suffering
damages, including punitive damages for neglect or abuse. Tennessee
enacted such a law in 2000, and Illinois passed a version of it two
years ago.

Loss: The Traumatic Death of My Soulmate Dog Zoey: No One Dares Publicly
Call It Veterinary Malpractice
I rescued my beloved dog Zoey from a high-volume killing pound. Bedraggled
and terrified, she was transformed into a handsome happy dog who danced
her life after she outgrew her fear and insecurity. We had nine years
together-not nearly enough. Zoey was diagnosed with cancer on October
9, 2001; thirteen days later, on October 23, 2001-a day I can never
forget-she was dead, but not from her illness. She developed all the
classic signs of chemo-induced sickness. Distraught and confused, I
thought Zoey might be dying; a veterinarian who did not know Zoey destroyed
her without any veterinary care, assessment, or consideration of the
effects of chemotherapy. From rescue, through life and into illness
and death, and then my inconsolable grief, this is Zoey's story. My
journal of her days of illness, her final days, hours, and her death,
all are included here. I remember Zoey in
zoeypoems
of remembrance and mourning and in photographs. I also provide a carefully
detailed exposé of what happened with the complaints I filed about veterinary
malpractice. I reproduce the complaint documents, my correspondences,
phone discussions, and the official response letters. The politics of
cover-up unfolds, revealing how impenetrable is the disregard for veterinary
misconduct. I offer advice and warning to others about how they might
best care for and protect beloved animals during their illnesses to
avoid the perils of the veterinarian's "license to kill." I offer my
thoughts about needed reforms to create objective and just review procedures.
Veterinary incompetence, negligence, and abuse are alive and well
in the United States and all over the world. Every day, untold numbers
of defenseless animals are left in the hands of some negligent, incompetent
doctors who inflict cruelty, injury, and death on our pets -- and get
away with it. Millions of people take their pets to vets every year.
Although skilled, competent veterinary care certainly outweighs the
incidences of negligence and abuse, the damage that those veterinarians
do is incalculable in terms of animal suffering, public health and safety,
consumer fraud, and the emotional devastation caused by knowing that
our beloved pets were harmed or destroyed by the very person entrusted
with their care. If you believe that no veterinarian anywhere would
ever deliberately harm an animal...never abuse client or public trust...never
abuse their positions as doctors...or would never violate the laws of
their profession...you will learn that public record, disciplinary actions
by vet boards, and increasing media coverage on this ugly and disturbing
subject say otherwise. And if you think that it can't happen to you
and your pet...think again.

vaccines are unsafe and they are unnecessary,

which unfortunately is not to be confused with conventional "wisdom".
This is an example of how the system is built upon a foundation of "speculation"

confer herd immunity and they DO NOT confer individual immunity. They
are however, the "golden calf" of the white coats that grows into the
"sacred cow" of vaccine induced disease. What will they do when the
public figures out they have been lied to for the purpose of "making
a living by killing" by the pharmaceutical medical industrial complex

protection? "

Malpractice and Grooming Accidents The difficulty in coping
when a companion animal suffers from an injuryor deathis compounded
when you suspect that negligence or abuse by your veterinarian may
be to blame. You can help protect your animal before tragedy strikes
by seeking out a skilled and caring veterinarian (ask for references
from trusted friends and humane organizations and call the local
Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, and State Board of
Veterinary Medical Examiners to check for complaints); seeking a
second or third opinion about your animal;s diagnosis before proceeding
with surgery or treatment; and carefully monitoring your animal;s
stay and treatment at the veterinary clinic. Never hesitate to ask
questions about your animal;s treatment and never leave your animal
overnight at a veterinary hospital unless you are convinced you
must. If your animal companion does become sick or injured while
at a veterinary clinic, immediately take your animal to another
veterinarian for a second opinion and treatment. Ask for copies
of your animal;s medical records from the original veterinarian
and show these to the second veterinarian. If your animal dies,
have the body necropsied to determine the cause of death. There
are several steps you can take when you suspect that veterinary
malpractice has led to your companion animal;s injury, sickness,
or death. learn

Animal Law
State legislatures are starting to reform their animal-protection
laws. New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Rhode Island are considering
legislation granting pet owners the right to sue for pain and suffering
damages, including punitive damages for neglect or abuse. Tennessee
enacted such a law in 2000 and Illinois passed a version of the law
last year. West Virginia has removed caps that once limited damages
to the assessed value of a pet. The trend is part of a growing push
to recast pet owners as "guardians" in the eyes of the law, a shift
that has some legal scholars worried. Some warn that these specific
changes in tort law could bring a wave of frivolous litigation and increases
in the price of veterinary care. Others question the move to classify
animals as something more than property. Animal-rights activists, on
the other hand, welcome such legislation, claiming it might help owners
recover substantial damages.

Why
I won't use the Elizabethan collar on my animals - The Elizabethan
collar is a type of plastic collar that is effective in preventing pets
from licking or biting themselves. The only time I will use such collar
is to prevent my dog from tearing up surgical sutures, until healing
is complete. I will never use such collar to prevent my dog from licking
skin eruptions, hot spots, or infected area anywhere on her body. The
dog's skin has an amazing ability to heal very quickly. Minor cuts,
tears or abrasion heal with great ease thanks in part to a healing aid
found in the dog's saliva.
This built in germicide found in the saliva of a dog amazingly heals
wounds in record time.
An
important part of hygiene and cleanliness is the tiger's rasping tongue.
In a typical grooming action the tiger will lick its paws and use them
to wipe over the face, ears and forehead. This is identical to the actions
used by the domestic cat. Any injuries are carefully licked and coated
with antiseptic saliva from the tongue. This aids in preventing infection
entering into a wound.

its skin or wounds is sad and cruel. Shirley
The
Facts About Declawing - What You Really Need To Know
Contrary to most people's understanding, declawing consists of amputating
not just the claws, but the whole phalanx (up to the joint), including
bones, ligaments, and tendons! To remove the claw, the bone, nerve,
joint capsule, collateral ligaments, and the extensor and flexor tendons
must all be amputated. Thus declawing is not a “simple”, single surgery
but 10 separate, painful amputations of the third phalanx up to the
last joint of each toe. A graphic comparison in human terms would be
the cutting off of a person's finger at the last joint of each finger.
Declawing is not without complication. The rate of complication is relatively
high compared with other so-called routine procedures. Complications
of this amputation can be excruciating pain, damage to the radial nerve,
hemorrhage, bone chips that prevent healing, painful regrowth of deformed
claw inside of the paw which is not visible to the eye, and chronic
back and joint pain as shoulder, leg and back muscles weaken.

Donna Starita Mehan DVM -"Routine" vaccination has adverse
side-effects, either short or long term. With vaccines that are repeated
year after year, the frequency and severity of these side-effects in
our pets has increased dramatically. Most of the problems involve the
immune system. After all, the immune system is what vaccines are designed
to stimulate. But they do so in a very unnatural way that can overwhelm
and confuse the immune system and can result in increased susceptibility
to acute infections (such as ear infections in dogs, bladder infections
in cats), chronic tapeworm problems, or in more degenerative cases,
cancer."

Danger of rawhide and pig ears
Some veterinarians warn against feeding rawhide and pig ears because
they can contain chemical residues (from chemicals used to remove the
fur) that can be harmful to your dog;s health. Also, larger pieces can
break off and be swallowed, getting stuck in the intestines and causing
blockages. When the rawhide gets wet from the stomach juices, it swells
to twice its normal size causing serious stomach blockage.Soft and slick
rawhide can also become a choking hazard.

Why You Should Avoid Soy (and avoid feeding it to your
animals)
by Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PhD
"...the soybean contains large quantities of natural toxins or "antinutrients".
First among them are potent enzyme inhibitors that block the action
of trypsin and other
enzymes needed
for protein digestion. These inhibitors are large, tightly folded proteins
that are not completely deactivated during ordinary cooking. They can
produce serious gastric distress, reduced protein digestion and chronic
deficiencies in amino acid uptake. In test animals, diets high in trypsin
inhibitors cause enlargement and pathological conditions of the pancreas,
including cancer. Soybeans also contain haemagglutinin, a clot-promoting
substance that causes red blood cells to clump together. Trypsin inhibitors
and haemagglutinin are growth inhibitors."
Recently there has been a tremendous increase in disorders like systemic
lupus, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, "myelinoma", pulmonary hypertension
and neuropathy. Soy and canola oils are players in the outbreak of these
disease conditions. So are the organophosphates, insecticides such as
malathion used in food production in the name of efficiency.

Canine Malignant Lymphoma and the use of chemicals around the home
A hospital-based case-control study of companion dogs examined the risk
of developing canine malignant lymphoma associated with the use of chemicals
in and about the home. The study indicated that owners in households
with dogs that developed malignant lymphoma applied 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic
acid (2,4-D) herbicides to their lawn and/or employed commercial lawn
care companies to treat their yard significantly more frequently than
control owners (odds ratio = 1.3). In addition, the risk of canine malignant
lymphoma rose to a twofold excess with four or more yearly owner applications
of 2,4-D. The findings in this study are consistent with occupational
studies in humans, which have reported modest associations between agricultural
exposure to 2,4-D and increased risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the
history and epidemiology of which are similar to those of canine malignant
lymphoma.
Asbestos, Cancer & Your
Pets
Not only can dogs inhale asbestos brought in by their owners, but dogs
can also drag asbestos dust into the home on their fur or feet if they've
been in a location where asbestos is present, such as near an older
building that's being demolished. That's why it's always necessary to
keep tabs on the whereabouts of your dog, as it may impact his health
and that of your family. Veterinarians who've studied dogs with mesothelioma
have also come to the conclusion that exposure to other toxic materials
may also increase the risk of the animal developing mesothelioma. Those
substances include pentachlorophenol, often used as an herbicide, algaecide,
defoliant, wood preservative, germicide, or fungicide. Studies have
shown that Bouvier des Flandres, Irish Setters, and German Shepherds
are at greatest risk for tumor development and the disease is more common
in male than in female dogs. more.

Rimadyl ~ the
drug that killed my Angel.
A warning from the heart
Pfizer marketed it for people, first, and they were dropping like
flies, so they quickly and quietly pulled the plug on it and...began
marketing it for dogs.
They say it's safe. There's a warning on the label, of course, and
a directive to vets to do bloodwork before the drug is dispensed and
to tell people about the possible side effects that Rimadyl can have.
Most of them don't. They say it's effective. It may be, for some dogs.
But the dogs who shouldn't have it...the dogs who are old or have some
condition that precludes their having it, the dogs who are sensitive
to it...they die from it. The ones who do well may keep on doing well;
then again, they may suddenly begin showing signs that they should be
taken off the drug right away. Of course, if you haven't been warned,
you don't recognize them.

Pesticides in our animal's food
Eating organic food and drinking pure water can have profoundly beneficial
effects on the health and longevity of our animals
According to Consumer Reports, January 1998, there are 9,700 pesticides
in existence, and in 1995, U.S. farmers applied 566 million pounds of
pesticides to major fiber and food crops. Last summer, the U.S. Geological
Survey announced the first results of a massive study of pesticides
in 5,000 water samples from wells and rivers. Half the wells--and nearly
all streams--contained at least one pesticide." Carolyn Swicegood has
excellent articles on the adverse effect of pesticides on parrots and
