Some breeders and trainers prefer to feed their dog twice a day to avoid stressing their digestive system.; I have been feeding Shasta strickly raw food once a day to give her digestive track a chance to rest which kept her healthy and never overweight. Some people claim that is is best to fee raw food, first and wait 6 hours before feeding kibbles to prevent fermentation in the stomach which may cause some dogs to have gas. They claim that it takes 18 hours for a dog to digest kibbles and only 6 hours to digest raw food. My friend, Pat Hartman, who is a German Shepherd expert recommends to never feed dry kibbles to German Shepherd dogs but to soak the kibbles first. Personally, I have not found this to be true. My new dog, Kuuma, eats dry kibbles (healthy kibbles) and raw meat at the same time without any bad effects.

Beware of rawhide and pig ears: Some veterinarians warn against feeding rawhide and pig ears because they can contain chemical residues (from chemicals used to remove the fur) that can be harmful to your dog’s health. Irradiated pet food endangering pets health, killing pets

The Australian government in late May ordered an immediate stop to sterilizing cat food via irradiation after reviewing scientific studies pointing to food irradiation as the culprit behind illnesses characterized by ataxia or paralysis of the limbs, especially the hind limbs. Symptoms in the Australian cats first appeared three to six months after they were exposed to the dry food, Child said. Some had eaten the food for as few as three weeks; others for more than six months. The problem affected 90 cats in Australia, of which 30 died, mostly by euthanasia after they became paraplegic or tetraplegic, according to Dr. Georgina Child, a neurologist at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital and University of Sydney Teaching Hospital. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also allows animal feed, including pet food and treats, to be irradiated up to 50 kGy.Irradiation can kill nearly all bacteria in food, both good and bad, but has no effect on the infectious agent that causes mad cow disease, or on viruses, such as those that cause hepatitis or foot and mouth disease. Contaminated Pet Food Affected 39,000 Cats And Dogs Nationwide; According to the latest reports released by one of the nation's largest chains of veterinary hospitals, nearly 39,000 cats and dogs were sickened or killed nationwide following the recent reports of pet food-contamination with an industrial chemical. The data, which was released by Banfield, The Pet Hospital, was reportedly compiled from records collected by its more than 615 veterinary hospitals.; On April 20, a new wave of recalls has been announced in the last 24 hours. Melamine, a chemical used to make plastics and fertilizers, was found in more than 100 brands of contaminated pet food that; were recalled from the marketplace in Canada and the United States in mid-March. Evidence suggesting that a shipment of the ingredient “Rice Protein Concentrate” contained melamine has come to light. Diamond Pet Foods, Natural Balance, Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo have all announced recalls of their products containing this ingredient. The contaminated ingredient is not brown rice; instead, it is “Rice Protein Concentrate”.

June 8 '07 - PetConnection.com reports that the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center has just issued a warning following the reports of acetaminophen ((ie Tylenol - VERY TOXIC to cats); in pet food n brands of cat and dog food not included on the Menu Foods recall list. However, the brands have not been named! Additionally, Wal-mart has just recalled Ol' Roy dog food in 69; stores in the south because of salmonella poisoning.

Domesticated animals, in contrast, are not eating their natural diet and the softer food accumulates on the outside of the teeth in an area where it cannot easily be cleaned off. It is familiar to us that we can put our tongue in between our teeth and the inside of the cheeks to clean out accumulated food. Dogs and cats cannot do that as their teeth are too sharp. In the natural state, carnivores keep the outside teeth clean by gnawing on bones, a process you can still see with both dogs and cats accustomed to eating bones. If you observe the position they take, you will see that they use their side teeth in a sliding motion along the bone and this scrapes off any residue left from eating. The obvious solution to the problem of tartar accumulation in domestic animals is to give them bones to chew on. In my experience this is the most effective method and, for many animals, will clean the teeth to perfection."
